Friends of mine would like a weimaranar they are not rushing in to it but are looking for information on them and would like to if possible to talk with some one about having one,and the realities of being owned by one of these lovely Dogs haha........ they really would like to go in to it with with good advice of what to look for i.e a good Breeder who health tests and any thing else they have to be aware of... so any information would be welcomed .......have made him understand that just because they say they are Kennel Club Registered doesn't automatically make them sound Dogs.... the great thing about these people is they are open to advice and are willing to listen and learn

Hey Annie :)

I would firstly say get in touch with a few breeders on the breed listings here and compare and cross reference what you get from each one.
Buy plenty of books on the breed its self, on puppy handling and training and socilising your dog.
Go to some Weimaraner shows and see the dogs in action and speak to people who show them and maybe breed them as well as they will know about the health defects side but as far as I know they are healthy dogs just need the basic health testing which is usually clear by birth.

Thats all I can offer as I dont have or know anyone with the breed personally :)
We researched for 2 yrs before getting our boy (Stafford) and he was well worth the wait :)

Hi Rach85
Good advice thank you will pass this on about going to shows though I think they will be doing that but they wasn't sure how friendly the natives were lol .....told them that people would gladly talk all day about their chosen Breed

I tattoo puppies for a Weims Breeder who does all the testing & breeds dogs to work rather than show & his dogs work on a couple of local shoots regularly. His own dogs are super not OTT like some I have met, last time I spoke to him he was planning a litter in later this year & is always willing to talk Weims to anyone

Have they ever owned a dog before? Weims are not for the faint hearted - they can be real sods. They can be great but need the right owners.

Hi, I have a weimaraner and in my eyes she is wonderful. She is hard work and does need a lot of exercise but I couldnt ask for a friendlier dog. She is crazy as in she still acts like a baby { she is nearly 3}. She is very strong and they do need a bit of firm training as they can be quite strong willed. Mine isnt used as a working dog, I just always loved this breed and wanted one for a pet and she is a great girl even if she does get too much her own way lol. The only problems I have with her is I would say she is too close to me and my partner so she does get a bit anxious when she is not with us. And we keep having a recurring problem with one of her ears which the vet keeps saying lots of weimaraners have problems with ears but other than that all is good. Good luck to your friend.

I have owned Weimaraners for 20 years and they are not for the faint hearted. They are an excellent breed given the correct training and time spent with them. They are people dogs and will follow you all over even to the toilet! They will take plenty of exercise as much as you can give them but without exercise & stimulation they can be hyperactive and destructive.

I work & show mine successfully and they are well trained but I have given them lots of my time. They respect me & I am number 1. As long as the dog knows who is boss all should be fine.

If you need to know anything else please ask.
