Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Where to get a good strong long lead/line?
- By Noora Date 23.08.08 14:10 UTC
Not really a behaviour question but where do you people buy your long leads from?

My Leo girl (1 year old) will be coming home in a less than a month and I want to be prepared.
She has grown up with my family and had few bad habits, mainly due to my family being a bit too soft with her and allowing her to do things they see as not doing any harm.
One of them is that she will go to any dog she sees.
They live in a quite close knit community and Sasha is used to being  off lead and has been allowed to go over to other dogs as 95% of the time she knows them already.
I did say this will not be allowed when she comes here and to teach her not to just go over and say hello but my family kind of ignored the advise...

I think I will need to get a long lead so that I'm in control and can teach her the new way of meeting dogs straight from the beginning.
I also know that a young Leo leaping around can really scare a another dog even though she doesn't mean harm.
When I was looking after my friends dog I also noticed there are few dog aggressive dogs being walked/trained at the park near me and I would hate her to cause set backs to them by her silly behauviour or her to get in trouble with these dogs.

I think her recall will need some work done too so I'll need long lead for that too...
She knows what she is supposed to do but lately she has got in to a habit of looking at you and you can just see her expression change and she will try to play the game of catch me if you can!

Being a Leo she is pretty large/strong so I was not sure where to get a long lead that will not snap/cut my hands off if she pulls on it...
She is already wearing a harness (her 5th one, due her growing out of them!) instead of a collar so all I really need is the lead/line.

I'm broke after paying for all the travel through Europe to go and get her, so cheap price would be a huge plus too :) :) :)

I bought a lunge line off ebay - they had them in a variety of colours :)

Apologies for being a bit off-point but if you take her to a training class for any level of the KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme they'll advise you that "all dogs must wear a collar and Identification tag complying with the law" (worn in addition to a harness).  When we went I was surprised to find that you MUST have your name and address on it; I always thought that a tel no was enough but if you didn't have a full one you would fail the course...

If you can find a good ADPT class they'll be able to help you with some of the bad habits you are hoping to change too and as you have been living away from your dog the training will help with your re-bonding.  If you can establish a partnership with your dog in a more controlled environment you should find it much easier when you are out and about.  The advantage of training alongside other dogs is that you can practise meeting and greeting too, if it's anything like our class there will always plenty of dogs both before and after class for you to meet.

I've seen some lines on Ebay that weren't too expensive...

Good luck

Ebay... never thought of that!

and thanks Dogs a babe I did know they have to wear a collar but did not know you have to have all those details on!
She does have collars to wear too but I mentioned about the harness as with long line I believe this is neeeded so the dog doesn't end up hurting their neck if they get to speed before being stopped?

We are planning to go to classes with her, I used to do agility and obedience and am hoping to find a hobby for me and Sasha after I see what she likes to do.
But we obviously need to find how we work together and "re-learn" all the basics properly again (My mum is not the bestest of trainers even though she does try, bless her!) so just basic classes are where we are aiming fo now.
She is pretty quick to learn and has figured out things very quickly when I have been visiting and teaching her stuff so I'm hoping we learn to work together pretty quickly and she will learn she can't get away with things as she is used to :)
I think she already knows I'm different compared to my parents who she has wrapped around her little-big paw!

Crikey, that's a bit risky, having something with your address on it. If your dog got lost and fell into the wrong hands, they could easily come and burgle you safe in the knowledge that your dog wasn't at home.

I don't think burglars bother with catching dogs to check on empty houses, most burglaries are opportunist.

It really bugs me if I find a dog with a tag and there is no address on.  Often the Tel no is out of date or the owners are out (probably at work or looking for the dog), if the address is on the tag the dog can be walked home as it is likely to be living fairly close by.  I don't usually want to have to take a dog home with me.  So I admit I often simply leave the dog hoping someone else will deal with it.

Also there may be other dogs in the house or maybe even teh owners ;o

One little comment, try and get a cotton - pref padded - line as the nylon/polypropolene ones can give you severe friction burn if the dog runs the line out thru your hands at high speed, otherwise never use it without gloves.

When the dogs are with my mother in law, even if just for the day, they wear diff collars and tags with all her contact details.  She often looks after one dog whilst the other is at shows with us and it really puts my mind at ease as we might not be immediately contactable.

A friend with a holiday rental house used to leave a bowl of spare dog tags, with the house address and tel no on it, for owners to put on visiting dogs.  She said some used to go 'walkies' but most would be posted back quite quickly!!
