Rosie had her puppies four weeks ago and is really missing her walks. She gets really upset when she is left behind when my husband goes to collect the newspapers.
However I am worried that if we let her do her usual walk to the post office with him, she might infect her puppies as I am not sure how much immunity they have through her feeding them.
What do others do?

My litter have just started leaving for their new homes this weekend as they are 8 weeks today.  I started taking mum out again when the pups were 2 weeks old, I was very careful where I took her and didn't walk her where we usually do as there are too many dogs, when we got back she got her paws disinfected and her ears as she is a long eared dog and she got a rub down with an anti bacterial pet wipe, I have had no problems and the pups are all fit and healthy.  I did contact the local vet to see if there had been any cases of the nasties in this area before taking her out though.  We have two other dogs and she was going crazy to go with them, she was very glad to get back with her pups though, but I think it made her a better mum as she wasn't frustrated.  I know not everyone will agree, but it worked for me.

Apart from the first few days when the invariably have to be dragged, almost kicking and screaming, into the garden a few times a day to make themselves comfortable, I always let my nursing bitches dictate when they go out for walks. They usually appear by the door when I'm putting the other dogs on their leads after about a week, so I take them for a short constitutional then. At that stage the pups have got excellent immunity through their mother's milk and are at no more risk of disease from their mother than than they are from anyone else who leaves the house.

A stir-crazy, stressed bitch isn't good for the puppies.

I always let my girls go for a walk with the other when she dictates. She always come back to her puppies happy from having her walk.
