Ive just been looking on a well known puppy advertising site and searched all breeds in my area (lancashire) - I was just being nosey. Of course their was a great variety of breeds advertised but a lot of bulldogs and sharpeis in particular, not that I ever really see those breeds when I am out with mine. From what I see the 'popular' breeds where I live are labradors, GR, boxers, staffs (the local rspca is full of them :() weinaraners and border collies used to very popular but I'm seeing less of these. My breed (sibes) are very rare where I live but when we drove to Norfolk to get our boy we saw 4 just in the time we were there. Just wondering what breeds are popular where you live?
- By newf3 [gb] Date 21.02.08 21:40 UTC
only one other newf in my neighbourhood ( that we know of ).
lots of staffs (seems that everyone got one of these for christmas this year)
although that does not suprise me round here as the owners all seem to be young men.
must be a status thing.
- By Butler 1 [gb] Date 21.02.08 21:44 UTC
My BMD is the only one in my village but people still like to tell me it is a St Benard !!! but we have a lot of lab's about here
- By ShaynLola Date 21.02.08 21:45 UTC
Labs & Goldens are the breeds we see most often around here.  Quite a few Staffies & Boxers too.

Mini Schnauzers are becoming increasingly popular too.

No other Newfs  round here at all...we hardly ever see any even though we tend to walk in a variety of places.
- By ice_queen Date 21.02.08 21:58 UTC
It's all staffies and Akita's up here in Bradford. Poorly bred specimins though :(

Also alot of "pits" as the locals call them!  I just giggle inside and guess they mean staff cross!!!  Infact I have a bloke bringing me his "pit" to see this sunday as it's not built up huge muscle at 4 months!  ARGH!
- By malwhit [ru] Date 21.02.08 22:22 UTC
Labs (especially chocolates) are common round here, followed by Staffords, then Schnauzers (loads of Minis and 3 Standards). There are also a lot of Spaniels - mainly working ESS, but also Cockers and a 2 Britanny Spaniels.

The rarer breeds I have seen are Spanish Water Dogs (one lives local, the other a visitor) and Shar-Pei. At the vets, I have also spotted a Bloodhound, Newfoundlands and a Spinoni. I never realised Doncaster was such a cosmopolitan place!!
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 21.02.08 22:32 UTC
Around here it's mainly Staffies, Lurchers, Jack Russells and various terrier types. Also Springers, Cockers, Labradors, Goldens and Border Collies. All the usual really.

As for rarer breeds, there is one other Toller in my town that I see occasionally. Also a Schipperke, Large Munsterlander and a Lagotto Romagnolo (the one that was on the Crufts preview programme a couple of years ago).
- By Gemini05 Date 21.02.08 22:38 UTC
I am the only one in our neighbour hood that has BMD, closest one as far as I know is about 5 - 10 miles away.
Staffies are very popular here, saw a terrible sight the other diay, sitting in my friends kitchen that looks over the woods and fields, to see a group of teenagers walking a litter of staffies, must have been 8 littermates I think, and they looked far too young to be out walking the streets, terrible.
GSD and Springers are also quite popular around here, a lot of rotties being advertised in this area aging from 8weeks to 7 years old!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.02.08 22:39 UTC Edited 21.02.08 22:42 UTC
Staffies, and oh staffies, Terrier types euphamistically called Jack Russellls Border Collies and crosses, GSD's (lots of long coats and atypical ones), Labradors and Springers.
- By briedog [gb] Date 21.02.08 22:41 UTC
flatcoated retriever and spanish water dog beacuse i breed them 6 swd in village,

but staffies,boxers.lab,dobs,collies,mongals.
- By Lissie-Lou [gb] Date 21.02.08 22:47 UTC
Mainly Border Collies around here, we live in a farming community though.  Lots of Labs and Goldies around town, but not up here in the hills.
- By Dill [gb] Date 21.02.08 22:49 UTC
Common dogs round here are Staffies (pet bred ones  :( ) Staffie crosses and 'Pits' :(  Bull crosses, Boxers, Mastiff crosses, Bull terriers, Westies (really awful ones usually :( )  Bichons (ditto) and cockers.

I also meet a Shar Pei, Newfoundland/s (there's a group 'swims' them in a lake not far from me)  Beardies, Pembroke Corgis, a Beagle and someone allows their Spinone to wander regularly    I used to get people knocking my door telling me I'd lost my dog - 2 other Bedlingtons living in my area used to be allowed to wander  but haven't seen either for a while now.
- By luvhandles Date 21.02.08 23:12 UTC
lots of staffies and DDB here. In my immediate area their are quite a few spaniels - Cavaliers, cockers and a springer next door to us, weim's and we have a gorgeous irish setter just up the road and a old aged afghan who is still so graceful despite his dodgy joints :-(
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 21.02.08 23:17 UTC
Staffies are the main breed around here.  One Kerry Blue that is the spitting image of a SWD.  Couple of Westie's and Lab's and 2 really nice Weim's and one Flatcoat.
- By messyhearts Date 21.02.08 23:22 UTC
Staffies, Weimies & Rotties.

>>>Just wondering what breeds are popular where you live? <<<

Im in Higher Bebington on the Wirral and Labs and Staffords seem to be the most common breeds here
- By Goldmali Date 22.02.08 00:38 UTC
Would the SWD be Robbie? There's also Malinois and Papillons in Doncaster but nobody ever seems to know what they are! ;)

Here where I live (rural) we only see Springers, Labradors, Staffies and one Border terrier. Plus our own dogs, of course.
- By tooolz Date 22.02.08 07:35 UTC
My living room window looks over a large common where there are loads of dog walkers. There are all sorts but the most common are labs, goldens, springers, westies, 2 mastiffs, beagles, lhasas, brittanys, chesapeakes, GSDs, retired greyhounds, SCWTs, Irish terriers, dalmatians, staffs and 'pits'- in fact if you watch long enough you'd probably see most things over the course of a year. There is one amazing silver standard poodle in puppy trim which has had all of his head hair rolled in to rasta dreadlocks about 14 inches long, he runs and runs with these things swinging around. It looks great and doesn't seem to bother him in the least.
I was asked yesterday by a fellow dogwalker if my Cavs were King Georges, that's a new one.
- By Tessies Tracey Date 22.02.08 08:07 UTC
Oh god this thread is breaking my heart :-(
Yep, Staffords mostly near me too.. and Stafford crosses....
Then probably labrador retrievers and springer spaniels..
- By peaches1 [gb] Date 22.02.08 08:13 UTC
Im a groomer near wolverhampton and i have dozens of westies and yorkies. They are definately the most common groomed breed. Also hundreds of staffies around this way. Not many gundogs in this area, i think almost every golden retriever is one bred by me!A few weimaraners and german shepherds!
mel.
- By MW184 [gb] Date 22.02.08 08:21 UTC
We see a lot of westies, jack russells and labs here.  Occasionaly rhodesian ridgebacks - theres a couple around, a couple of boxers - but on asunday afternoon its westie world!

- By Brainless [gb] Date 22.02.08 08:24 UTC

> Oh god this thread is breaking my heart :-(

The KC most popular breed figures are probably only an indication and possibley wrong re rank order, as some of the most commonly seen breeds in my area Staffs GSD's, Border Collies and ESS are unregistered.

I really do see more Staffs than anything else.  The chap outside the Doctors with his Tartan coat (he semed and old dear) had the most labrador type ears, but he was a love.
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 22.02.08 08:26 UTC
Where i live which is rural we see mainly border collies, terriers, labs and springers.

The nearest town yep follows the trend, mainly staffie types.
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 22.02.08 09:35 UTC
In my area there are lots of different breeds - the two most common are westies, labs, and jack russells (ok, not a KC breed, but nonetheless.)  Most common mixed breed (which are not that common here) are staffy crosses.

... but seen on a regular basis, Newfies, Bernese Mountain dogs, German Shepherds, shih tzus, springers, goldens, flat coated retrievers, sibes, basset hounds, beagles, dachshunds (minature and regular), greyhounds, lurchers (ok, not a KC breed again),  Rhodesian Ridgebacks, whippets, english setters, australian terriers, yorkshire terriers, Vizslas, american cocker spaniel, weimaraner, border terrier, cairn terriers (and not just my own), Glen of Imaal Terrier (1 only, but I see him a lot!), airedale terrier, (1) boston terrier, lhasa apso, mini schnauzers (quite a few), giant schnauzer (1 lovely young bitch), poodles (mini), Shar pei (1), Tibetan Terriers, Boxers, Dobermans, Malamutes, Malinois, Border Collies, OEs, Shetland sheep dog, Bichon frise, Cavelier King Charles ...

Even I am surprised at the list - these are all dogs I see on a regular basis. Which I think says something about the socio-demographic makeup of my patch in Surrey!
- By Tenaj [gb] Date 22.02.08 09:38 UTC Edited 22.02.08 09:44 UTC
7 years ago when I got my first dog I saw very very few pure breeds around, most of the local dogs were from rescues. Now I see mostly 'pedigree' dogs, and more are from breeders than from rescues.

Several rare breeds around too and they are all in the hands of first time owners and bought to be used for breeding so I think we will see more around shortly.

The most common breeds are still the labs, but in the past they were mostly yellow now they are mostly chocholate and more towards a balance between the b,y & c in colours.  BC or collie cross trype are very common.  shih tzus and  springers and mini schnauzers are common, and there are always  lots of Westies! :)

There are very few Staffies and Rotties and GSD  around now especially compared to 4 or 5+ years ago but I frequently see adds for Staffie  pups for sale in the local supermarkets/pet shops.
- By belgian bonkers Date 22.02.08 09:51 UTC
Staffs, collies, lurchers, labs.  I've got the only Belgians round here.
- By LJS Date 22.02.08 09:56 UTC
We have mainly Labs (black) as a local woman decided to have about 4 litters and sold them all to locals so the place is over running with them !

We also have a few GR's, BC and Westies and quite a few crosses.
- By tooolz Date 22.02.08 10:19 UTC Edited 22.02.08 10:24 UTC
Tenaj: Yes I'm noticing that too.

This is the number one place to walk dogs around my area so I see loads of dogs but it is really quite rare to see an old fashioned mongrel. I don't mean the expensive cross-breed but the Heinz 57.

On our local news ( South today) in the last 2 days I've seen two seperate interviews that had families with Bulldogs in the background, both were bitches and both had / or just about to have litters.
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 22.02.08 11:01 UTC
Wow it seems that wherever you are labs and staffies are very common. As I mentioned when I started this thread my local RSPCA is full of staffies (I was in there in Dec and at least 85% of the dogs in there were staffies/staffie crosses) which is such as shame as they are generally fantastic dogs. However as with all dogs in the wrong hands without proper training they would be a nightmare. Funnily enough though there were no labs in the RSPCA despite them being very popular round here. I'm guessing from the location of the RSPCA (being a bit stereotypical here but from the conversation with the staff there this seems to be whats happening) poorly bred staffies are getting into the wrong hands very easily and attracting a different type of owner (a lot of young lads/very young couples) whereas other breeds eg labs are being bought by owners who have considered the implications of owning a dog more carefully. I certainly hope this changes and is not a national problem (although I expect it is) as breeds like staffies get such bad press as it is combined with the poor breeding that going on a lot of lovely little dogs will end up in rescue and struggle to be rehomed because people believe what theyve read in the new :(
- By Nikita [gb] Date 22.02.08 11:01 UTC
Labs and staffies most round here I think, but it depends where you walk - go one way and that's all you see, with the odd golden and GSD thrown in; go the other way, to the central park, and you see all sorts of lovely dogs.

So far I've seen a beautiful red roan English setter (I think, not sure on the colour technicalities for setters), all sorts of weird and wonderful mongrels (including the most gorgeous little blue merle and tan terrier mix, a real eye-catcher), rotts, staffs, yorkies, westies, labs, goldens, boxers, GSPs, scotties, akitas, huskies, norfolks/norwichs (was at a distance so not sure), collies, GSDs, dobes and a few other types.  Quite the mix compared to where I used to live!

I'm still the only owner I know of with red and fawn dobes though :-) Always a good conversation starter!
- By Goldmali Date 22.02.08 11:17 UTC
I was asked yesterday by a fellow dogwalker if my Cavs were King Georges, that's a new one.

LOL! I was asked once if mine were King Edwards!
- By Bodhi Date 22.02.08 11:31 UTC
Here where I live in East Sussex, the most common dog seen is definatley the Staff or Staff x.  It does depend on which area you go to, but you always see more staffs than any other. I do see a variety of other breeds though including Chocolate Lab, GR, Rough Collie, Schnauzer, Am Cocker,
Border Collie, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Clumber Spaniel, Cav's, JR's, Boxer, Newf, Min poodle, Giant schnauzer, Lurcher, Greyhounds, Skye terrier, Shih Tzu, GSD, Rotts,Akita, Westie and on Monday I saw two French Bulldogs )
- By Crespin Date 22.02.08 11:53 UTC
I see a lot of Staffs, and Pit Bulls.  Even with the breed ban, that came into effect in August of 2005, you still see a lot of them.  Sad really, that soon, Ontario wont have any of the Bull Terriers.

See a lot of the sporting group, well GR, labs, spaniels.  And toy dogs are really common here too.

But a majority of dogs round here, are the designer dogs.  Lots of cockapoos, labradoodles, etc.  Sad really, but.......

Min Pins, are increasing in popularity here.  Maybe a good thing, maybe not.
- By dexter [gb] Date 22.02.08 12:13 UTC
I see a lot of staffs, staff x s, labs especially yellow, ess, cocker spaniels, golden retreivers, gsds, some lovely dobermanns, collies, norfolk terriers, boxers, jack russels, lurchers, cavalier king charles, and 1 bloodhound who i occasionally see.
- By huskypup [us] Date 22.02.08 12:32 UTC
In my part of Essex; labradors (all colours), Spaniels (mostly Springers) and Westies, quickly followed by boxers, golden retrievers and greyhounds.  There are a few of the rarers breeds, even met a lovely Otter Hounds and a gorgeous Finnish Spitz pup.
- By Merlot [gb] Date 22.02.08 12:39 UTC
Lots of Staff /Staff crosses round here too with a good smattering of BC's and Colly type crosses, Chocolate labs, Boxers inculing some with tails and Goldies, Westies and Bichon's number fairly high too. Have a couple of Tollers too and one lady who has a couple of St Bernard's, we have a Tibetan Mastiff lady locally who shows as well so I sometimes see hers as well. Oh and I know of at least four flatcoats locally, and one lady near me who has a GSD, a Goldie and an Elkhound! and another who has two Chinese crested (One Fluffball and one Bald!) a Pom and a Mittel.
Quite a variety!
- By georgepig [gb] Date 22.02.08 13:10 UTC
Most that I see on the park near me are crosses of some sort, along with dubious looking 'labs' and a few goldens.  There is a gorgeous Akita, a few ESS and two 'puggles' (sorry pug x beagle).  That sounds like a really rubbish selection compared to what others seem to have (and I live in a town so not like there's no folk nearby!!).  I'd love to see an unsual breed on my local park.
- By Dogz Date 22.02.08 13:14 UTC
A good mixture here I think, cockers, and westies probably the most common though.
(This is the North Angels!)

- By spiritulist [in] Date 22.02.08 13:18 UTC
Staffies, because we are in Staffordshire I soppose and there's a lot of Collies, Labs and Border Terriers because we're kinda countryside too
- By Harley Date 22.02.08 13:31 UTC
The most common type of dog I see in our area are Staffordshire/Staffordshire crosses. There is a DogsTrust rehoming centre very nearby and they bring a lot of dogs down to this area for rehoming. Crossbreeds of various types are all common round here.

I travel to take my dogs for walks as I like to have variety in my walking so see a fair few dogs when out and about. On the streets around my home I usually see small breeds of dog - Westies, Yorkies, Border Terriers etc. In my neck of the woods people with smaller dogs seem to just road walk them or take them to the beach and I usually see them doing the same trip around the block day in and day out. Perhaps they don't realise that small dogs can go to the woods as well :(

On my rural or forest walks we tend to meet a much larger variety of dogs but mainly from Springer Spaniel size upwards. Some dogs are only seen at weekends and there are around 15 different dogs  I see on a regular basis. I also see quite a few puppies but not many of these seem to continue with their woodland walks once they are older.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 22.02.08 13:49 UTC
We live in a really small village and Westies seem to be flavour of the month here. We have our fair share of border collies too as we are in the countryside. We also have a couple of Vizla's, flat coats, a Bull terrier, a GSP and a good few Heinz 57 as we used to call the mongrel population. Where I work there are a lot of greyhounds around (but there is a greyhound track nearby) and I saw a gorgeous husky puppy just last week ( wanted to take it home!)

On our walks it is usually spaniels and labs we come across.
- By Cava14Una Date 22.02.08 14:21 UTC
Labs Collies ESS and Jack Russells  Would you believe I saw 3 Dalmatians the other day 2 live a few doors away and were in the garden and another one walked past!!!

Don't see many staffies at all
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 22.02.08 14:26 UTC
Labradors (choc esp) Goldies, LOADS of staffs, westies, schnauzers, cockers, greyhounds, ointers other GSDs - quite a nice overall mix, though I did a different walk the other day and the ONLY dogs I met were staffs.

I was asked once if mine were King Edwards!

MarrianneB   : Oh that did make me laugh - Tattie'ead would appreciate that one!  :-)

I do see a lot of Staffies, westies and labradors.

Funny breed numbers have change quite a bit over the last couple of years. Fads I guess.

Took this from the breed notes today.

Westie current numbers:

2007 registrations 8309   , which is approx 1000 down on 2006,

Ten years previously was 15131.

- By LJS Date 22.02.08 15:57 UTC
A few of the Westies around here are rescue :-)
- By cocopop [gb] Date 22.02.08 16:36 UTC
In our local area we see: Westies, Jrt, Bulldog, Cocker. CKCS, Greyhounds, Lab, Beagle, Shih Tzu, and of course our GRs' plus a couple of others. Only recently have there been a couple of Staffs around :-)
- By hairyloon [gb] Date 22.02.08 16:57 UTC
We've got quite a mix in our local area, around the villiage I live in there are several Labs, at least 1 Border Terrier, a very out of control Akita :-(, a huge oversized Staffy / Staffy x, a labradoodle, a couple of Old English Sheepdogs, several Collies / Sheepdogs (sorry I'm not great on the correct terminology for the breed) and a load of heinz type mongrels.

Our dog club has a pretty good mix of dogs too, again lots of collies as it is an agility/flyball focused club, but in the KCGC classes we've got a Springer, a Working Cocker, 2 Finnish Spitz, 2 GSD's, a lovely undocked Rottie pup, a couple of King Charles (not the 'Edward' potato variety lol) and loads more. We have a couple of rescue Staffs and Staff x in the club, but they don't seem to be a very popular breed in my area.

- By paulaj [de] Date 22.02.08 17:47 UTC
Where i am there seems to be lots of Staffy/Staffy X's and Boxers.  I think the next "in" breed is going to be the Shar Pei as i've heard a few people say they are getting pups soon.
At our club there's lots of Papillons and Daxi's, mainly small breed dogs.  I think besides us there's only a couple of Aussie Shepherds and an Irish Wolfhound that are of any size at all, LOL
