Are any other breeds having a high incidence of this?

I now know of at least 4 bitches (one of mine included) who have not had pups.  My boy was used four weeks ago and the owner has just had her scanned and yet again nothing!

I'm sooooooooooo depressed, I really wanted a little girl to show this year and it doesn't look like it's going to happen!
- By HoundHam [gb] Date 18.01.08 11:45 UTC
So sorry to hear your news...

I have used Frozen Semen that I brought over from Sweden from a lovely Hound, used this twice noooo puppies, Trude was supposed to whelp Christmas eve...nothing. :-(
All my girls have taken by natural matings though.

What I have done now is to look at different options, as I am loosing heart with the AI.

Ahh sorry to hear this!  Hopefully Carmen will be going to a boy that is already in this country soon and the owners allowing him to stay with my parents as she's a maiden bitch, so we can have a few goes!!!

I will try Lana later on in the year if I get permission from the KC with hopefullly a champion boy who I'm hopefully going to look after for a few months later on in the year!  So maybe fate is just stepping in and telling me to wait, who knows!!
- By HoundHam [gb] Date 18.01.08 13:08 UTC
I agree.. I do think fate steps in and there is usually a very exciting reason behind it!!

Best of luck for later on in the year, I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

No to natural matings - Munsters seem to be popping all over the place! ;-)

But last year 2 overseas LM bitches I know of (Both previous litters) failed to take by AI (Both incidentally the same dog), one of the bitches has had a natural mating & a litter of 6 (Small Munster litter size) and the other was remated using AI & the same dog and has taken.

Several queens I've heard of had poor or no call patterns last year or failed to conceive.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.01.08 14:17 UTC
Mine just did, was mated first week in December.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.01.08 14:19 UTC
In Response to HoundHam

To be honest with the odds stacked against you with frozen semen and the cost for shipping storing and the Vets fees you are probably better doing as I did Oct 2006, and fly with your bitch to the stud dog.
- By Crespin Date 18.01.08 15:11 UTC
Two breedings, on the same bitch.

First breeding no litter

Second breeding, ended up no litter, but dont know if she lost the litter during pregnancy from a trauma.

Both we natural matings.

My girl has silent heats, which makes it really really hard, without all the progesterone testing done.

do you all swab you bitches at the begining of there seasons , only asking as we had a spate of no puppies for 3 years and our young maiden bitches were not having proper seasons, turns out we had picked up BETA HAEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCAL which is a bacterial infection that bitches pick up from weeing over another bitches wee or sharing water bowls licking each other etc , easy to get not so easy to get rid of and it will spread to every bitch you have.
We had to wait for two of our bitches to come into season have swabs taken when it was confirmed as beta all our bitches had to be treated at the same time or there is no point.
It is not an infection that makes them ill so you don't know that they have it , it just lives in the bitches tubes.
It makes bitches either not able to conceive or sometimes they carry for so long then either reabsorb or abort , but most of the time they cannot conseive atall.
Our vet told us that there is a spate of it again at the moment as it originates from pigs and cattle but mutates very easily to infect dogs.
We could have picked it up anywhere shows, out walking etc.
I'm not an expert can only tell you what happened to us.

Well the owner of one of the girls used to be a cattle farmer, but don't hink he's been involved in this for a while??

Lana my girl lives with my parents and due to temperament problems after my house was broken into and she was taken she doesn't really get out so can't see it being this.
- By peanuts [gb] Date 18.01.08 17:17 UTC
Fair enough just a thought

There have been a few in my breed over the years. My own bitch missed twice, though there may have been a very good reason for that due to her having a caesar. I have heard that some bitches that have missed in the past and were put onto ordinary rain water out of a barrel instead of tap water went on to conceive. Someone I spoke to wondered if the recycling of water in the cities might have something to do with animals missing. With so many women taking the pill there was still contraception hormones in the water :-)
- By HoundHam [gb] Date 18.01.08 21:42 UTC
Hi Barbara,

I had to give the AI another go...but totally agree....so have arranged an alternative option :-)
I just adore and love the breed so much....even with all the hassles one way or another!! ;-)

Many thanks for your input.

Well if that's the case the next one that I mate should have loads of pups as all of my dogs here prefer to drink the rain water than what I give them from the tap or kettle!!
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 19.01.08 10:24 UTC
:-D

Of course we could be blaming the wrong dog (bitch?!?) Sometimes a bitch will 'take' only to reabsorb later due to unknown circumstances. Who said breeding was easy?????
- By JeanSW Date 19.01.08 11:59 UTC
I've never had a bitch miss, but I'm sure it will happen one day.  No problems with the bitch that visited my boy.  And my bitch went to a stud recommended by my mentor, she was due yesterday, but whelped Wednesday.  Super easy whelping too, I do love those!  I've had fingers crossed all along for this litter, as I am keeping the pups to show.  I do feel sorry for those of you wanting a show pup and not getting one.  It must be so disappointing.
- By britney1000 Date 21.01.08 17:07 UTC
I know of 3 Tibetan Mastiff bitch's that have missed this year and one Tibetan Spaniel, all natural matings.  There seems to be an increase over the years.
- By LoisLane Date 21.01.08 21:19 UTC
One of my bitches has missed three times in a row. She had her first litter at 18months (small litter) then had a 14 month rest! she has baffled the vet and me!!
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 22.01.08 09:20 UTC
Have you gone down the route of swabbing for infection, bloods to find correct ovulation date etc?  I had a bitch miss once and then did all I could to make it happen and ended up with a litter of 9 - will do all the tests next time as I can't afford her to miss again as it will be her 2nd and final litter and I want a bitch puppy to keep here.
- By LoisLane Date 23.01.08 16:48 UTC
Hi Ells-Bells, yes have done all of above. I did keep two of her bitches back from the litter she had, so not all is lost. Thanks for replying.
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 23.01.08 17:03 UTC
Are you going to try again?  Best of luck if you do.
- By LoisLane Date 23.01.08 17:27 UTC
I think i may do. . Just once more! I may try the same stud as her first litter.
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 24.01.08 11:55 UTC
Sorry Diane, didn't know you're other mating was unsucessful.  Ho hum, think I'm going to let the lab loose next time hee hee, failing that the 11 year old TT.

Wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't soooooo broody, but then I guess so are you as we were both dreaming of a nice bitch this year to show!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 24.01.08 13:30 UTC
Yes I'm EXTREMELY broody, would of loved a little Anton but it wasn't to be!!!  The way things are going there'll be much chance of me becoming pregnant and that would be a blooming miracle!
- By STARRYEYES Date 24.01.08 19:35 UTC Edited 24.01.08 19:37 UTC
I used the matetel for the first time this mating and it was spot on , it was also the same time I would normally have mated her , the changes in the saliva are amazing , I continued to test her after the mating to see what changes it made within 3 days she was showing nothing ( mating over the christmas period so really should have visited the stud xmas day but left it to boxing ) :) , I was told to test her again on her 14th day and if it ferns she is most probably pregnant so did the test and it once again showed ferning .
I had my girl scanned yesterday and she is in whelp approx 7 puppies.
- By pugnut [gb] Date 26.01.08 12:57 UTC
My bitch missed on a mating done in the summer, she was a the stud for three days and was mated a handful of times with one actual tie. When I went to collect her(we dropped her off as the stud lives a long way from our home) the stud owner said she had started to get a weepy eye.
On further examination she had a corneal ulcer, which dispite attempts by the vet at treating it, ruptured horribly and she had to be refered to a specialist to save the eye. Thankfully it all went amazingly well given the circumstances and the eye was saved.
Im guessing the stress and medications scuppered any chances of a pregnancy, anything that may have started would've been absorbed. Just as well really, I couldnt imagine her trying to deal with pups and a healing eye. I was in two minds about getting her to the vets for a jab to cause a miscarriage, just in case. Stressful doesnt even begin to describe it!
However the stud offered a second mating on the next season so this time I stayed with her and just had the one mating. I couldnt risk leaving her just in case.
This time she has taken and is currently looking like shes swallowed a football! All very exciting and I'm sure she'll do just as well as she did her last litter.
So dont give up hope on your bitches, with a bit of investigation to rule out bacterial infections and low sperm counts I'm sure it'll all be fine :)
- By pugnut [gb] Date 26.01.08 13:15 UTC
Ive just googled the matetel you mentioned 'starryeyes', it looks very interesting. I think I may have to get one to test my youngest bitch. At 18 months shes had two heats that were at 8mths and again recently at 18mths. Neither were 'text book' and I'm dreading when the time comes to mate her. So hopefully this test will work well and save everybody alot of time and effort!
- By STARRYEYES Date 26.01.08 16:03 UTC
my youngest had her first season at 8m and now at 18m she has just come into season a few days ago so will be using the matetel on her just to see what the changes are and when she is 'likely' to ovulate for the future even though I realise it can change from season to season and possible get later as she gets older.

Peanuts. Just looked at the link for the ovulation pads, worth a try!!

You could try the diabetic strips from the chemist - same principal, I think,  as the ovulation pads.......

I remember from a few years ago a vet doing an experiment with his bitches ( I am sure it was the vet that writes for dog world but may be wrong). His bitches seasons were all over the place, a couple had missed when mated and he was convinced that it had something to do with the hormonal pill being excreted in the water system and the particles are too samll to remove. He collected rainwater in a butt and gave them that to drink, he continued to do this and after 6 months the seasons were all back on track and the bitches that missed took. He stated that he would never give tap water to his dogs again.
On another note my neighbour who is a nurse specializing in prostate cancer was advised by a consultant that studies have shown that male breast and prostate cancer has increased 100% since the 60's when the pill was introduced. Makes you think if it is all linked
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 31.01.08 15:55 UTC
WELL ONE OF THEM HASN'T MISSED.  JUST HAD AN E-MAIL TO SAY THAT MY ANTON'S GOING TO BE A DADDY (he's the one on my avatar)!!!    She was scanned 3 weeks ago and told nothing there, just had her re-scanned by a sheep scanner and there's two, maybe three there so hopefuly I'll be a grandma in less than 2 weeks time!!!
- By Polo Date 31.01.08 16:00 UTC
Congratulations Perrodeugua and Anton!!! Do keep us us posted, its exciting!

I think that if you ask in the chemist for glucose detection strips (for diabetics) , they know what you mean

Oooh I will Polo.  I'm sooooo excited.  Oh and by the way admin this is not an advert as with this number they are already sold and it's not actually me who is having them.  Oh wish I could do smilies as this isn't meant in a nasty way or anyting just to advise that NO PUPS WILL BE FOR SALE!

>Someone was talking about the diabetic strips the other day at a show. Have you got the name of them please.

They are called  CLINISTIX from any chemist £ 5-75  for 50.
- By Polo Date 31.01.08 19:41 UTC Edited 31.01.08 19:44 UTC
Heh heh,  probably not meant for me anyhow, but there's no way I'll be getting a puppy for another ten years and obv. wouldn't get one withought minimum two years research  into a new breed first. You can still do smilies but unfortunately not the full range (see if this works :-(  ) And :-)  ;-)   You type   : - )  but without spaces. I'm really glad for you Perrodeagua, I can see how much this means to you. p.s. Anton is a handsome boy, and I love Carmen she's stunning. Edited; in reply to post a few posts above

Many thanks for the info.
- By donnabl [gb] Date 06.04.08 19:52 UTC
i havent been able to get onto the site for the ovulation pads.  Following on from the post of the clinistix, how are they used?  Has anybody had any success using either of these methods.
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 07.04.08 06:00 UTC
I bought some Clinistix - I used them from day 8 and it is really hard to tell very much - the moisture colours the end anyway - so perhaps the ovulation pads are slightly different and its easier to read results.  I relied on bloods again.  As I have a large pot of them I will try again when another bitch somes into season - just for practice really and see if I can start to read results better.
