Well, just come back from the chiro - I deicded to go ahead and try it now rather than wait till my back goes again.
I'm glad I did - he's basically said that if it'd gone on for much longer, without being properly sorted out, I may have deteriorated to a point that couldn't be helped - such as slipped disc and the like. Lots of inflammation round the problem area, and my neck is awful (my own fault - I have a nasty habit of popping it like you would knuckles). So things to work on.
So, tonight is the opposite of "today is the first day of the rest of my life"! It's the last of my life so far. One big packet of crisps and a chocolate brownie, then up at 5 to start again - no more popping of joints, taking it easy as best I can till the first treatment session on Tuesday, and sorting my diet out once and for all to give my body the best chance it can have to heal properly.
I really am very impressed - with the osteos, both of them that I've seen, the best I got was aa quick prod of my lower back, a "you've got these vertebrae out of place" and treatment; the chiro has checked all my joints, feet to neck, my heart and blood pressure, asked me all questions under the sun to get as full a picture as possible of the problem, and he wants to get an x-ray of my spine as well to help get that picture.
