Topic Other Boards / Foo / Oteopaths vs. chiropractors

What's the difference?  I put my back out again on Saturday (thank you SO much Soli ), so I'm off to see my osteo on Wednesday.  But it didn't happen that long ago, I had three treatment sessions and it seemed to be fine but here I am again.

So I'm wondering what chiropractors do differently, if anything?  If it happens again after this round of treatment I may well look - I need to be physically able pretty much all the time, and it's darned expensive too - I can't really afford this round of treatment, but as I'm a cleaner I haven't got a choice.

Or, are there other options?  I'm loathe to go to the doctor, I did when it first started and was told "it's only muscular, I'll refer you to the physcio" - never got the appt, and the pain got so debilitating I went to my first osteo who told me I had two vertebrae out of line.  Hmm, very muscular.  He fixed me up nicely but it doesn't seem to be lasting so well now - my new osteo does electric acupuncture followed by a stretch, I might ask to go back to normal manipulation like the first guy.

I can't compare the two, as I only used a chiro who was fantastic. I too was told 'muscular' but when I had my X-ray (they do this first) they found I had broken my collar bone and it had healed itself and was an old injury (I remember the pain, but my GP said it was bruising! Mannnnyyy years before, horse accident) also I had a really bad whiplash injury again old....(explained all the years of megrain which after treatment I no longer suffer with) and a problem with the lower spine and my hip joints. Seems the horse riding (and falling off lol) had caused many problems which had over the years compounded. Anyway, I hobbled in, hardly able to walk, and after just the first session I walked out, although slowly, had several treatments but even now, many years later, I am so much better than I was. Still have some back pain, but weight may be a part of that! I have seen people carried in on boards that have walked out. Yes, I'm a great fan of them, seen the results on polo ponies too, and hunters, quite amazing. I'd say, if you can afford it, try one, but make sure the one you chose is regostered.

Thanks, I'm looking at the registry now!  I will probably give it a go - if this time around is anything to go by, it's going to happen again.  I didn't do it in any such exciting way as you though - I overdid the snowboarding lessons  :D

Don't know why I've not looked before though - Soli was treated by an animal chiropractor and it made such a difference to her.

I think you may have something with the weight idea :p - I was thinking about that yesterday, I am only a couple stone over but it tends to gather round my midriff  :p, and it's my lower back that's bad.  I'm being very strict with myself now!

The Chiropractor is mainly spinal. and then the osteopath is all things skeletal, the physio is nuero/muscular skeletal/respiratory.

sorry but must disagree with this, the one I go to -same guy does my dog as well- ( Yes he is qualified for both) does toes, fingers, skull and everything in between. When he does the dog he does head to tail and down to toes on them.

Well, just come back from the chiro - I deicded to go ahead and try it now rather than wait till my back goes again.

I'm glad I did - he's basically said that if it'd gone on for much longer, without being properly sorted out, I may have deteriorated to a point that couldn't be helped - such as slipped disc and the like.  Lots of inflammation round the problem area, and my neck is awful (my own fault - I have a nasty habit of popping it like you would knuckles).  So things to work on.

So, tonight is the opposite of "today is the first day of the rest of my life"!  It's the last of my life so far.  One big packet of crisps and a chocolate brownie, then up at 5 to start again - no more popping of joints, taking it easy as best I can till the first treatment session on Tuesday, and sorting my diet out once and for all to give my body the best chance it can have to heal properly.

I really am very impressed - with the osteos, both of them that I've seen, the best I got was aa quick prod of my lower back, a "you've got these vertebrae out of place" and treatment; the chiro has checked all my joints, feet to neck, my heart and blood pressure, asked me all questions under the sun to get as full a picture as possible of the problem, and he wants to get an x-ray of my spine as well to help get that picture.

Pleased you have found one, and fingers crossed it goes well for you. As I have said, I have found them fantastic. Good Luck :D :D

Sounds promising and hope they sort things out

Both Physios and Chiropractors admitted defeat with me  The only way I could be pain free (only a temp measure) was to have this done twice back in Dec and Jan of this year. http://www.espalda.org/english/divulgativa/dolor/como_tratar/informacion_paciente/rizolisis.asp

It was amazing how the pain was almost irradicated . It has gradually started to come back and think probably early next year I may have to go and get it done again.

The only real way the can diagnose what is going on in the back is an MRI scan so try and get them to get one done for you.
