Topic Other Boards / Foo / Tempur beds: anyone got one?
- By Minipeace [gb] Date 14.10.07 16:18 UTC
Hi

My father has been looking at the range of Tempur beds and I was wondering if anyone has one and could possible let me know what they think.
I've got a sample that the company sent me with info on their range plus a sample and they sound very good but at the same time are expensive.
The sample would be perfect for a hamster:cool:

no. not yet but to get one after christmas,
have bought one of those top up foam mattes that you can put on top of your old mattes that been good so we going to get the tempur one later,

friend of ours has one and wouldnt be with out it.

I know someone that had one and would swear by it :)
He has had to get rid of the bed, as it is too big for his room but his dog now has a piece of it and loves it!!!
I WANT ONE!!!!!
Lea :)

We got one two years ago it was expensive but we absolutely loved it but now I would say its knackered!! It now has body shaped permanent moulds in it!!! It really is more comfortable than a conventional mattress but if its only going to last 2 years it works out very expensive!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.10.07 17:50 UTC
Only two years? Blimey, that is a short life-span. Traditional wisdom says a mattress should be changed after 10 years.
- By ali-t [gb] Date 14.10.07 17:59 UTC
I don't have a tempur one but had a mattress topper on a normal mattress then bought a proper memory foam mattress.  Haven't slept on the mattress alone but put the topper ontop of the memory foam mattress and now I'm like the princess and the pea and sleep like a baby.  Also have memory foam pillows and they are great.  I bought everything online and got total bargains with good makes in heavily reduced sales.  The only down side is that I don't get a good nights sleep if I stay in hotels or other people's houses as I'm used to my pampered existence at home. lol

I have a memory foam mattress (on top of a sprung base) but it's not a Tempur one.  We've had it about 6 months and I absolutely love it :)  It is sooo comfy!!

Fifi, yours really shouldn't be knackered so soon.  Have you been turning the mattress as frequently as advised.  With mine, it is recommended that the mattress is turned every fortnight to prevent the indentations from happening.  Mine also came with a 10 year guarantee.
- By munkeemojo Date 15.10.07 18:13 UTC
i've got one of these, and i must say, i'd never go back to a spring only mattress. It cost more than a full memory foam one (mine was £700, although the full foam wasn't a tempur one-it was sleepmaster's own), but i like the extra support from the springs underneath. I didn't like the sinking feeling the full foam one had-it was like you were laying in it rather than on it. I turn mine round every month or so, and have had no problems, and we've had it two years now-maybe longer.
- By Tigger2 Date 14.10.07 18:32 UTC
I can't afford the 'real McCoy' but have a 3" memory foam topper and absolutely love it. I used to toss and turn all night, and be plagued by sore backs and sciatica...being very overweight doesn't help any of this of course. Since I bought the mattress topper 2 years ago I've slept better and never so much as had a twinge in my back :) I maybe change position once a night, sometimes I'm still lying in the exact same place when I wake up - it's just so comfy. Unfortunately the dogs love it too so it can be difficult to get a space on my king size bed :D

Wow thanks everyone for the quick replies.

Fifi thats an interesting point about the compression issue. I wonder if you could complain about that.

Looking at the info I have a few issues on warranty and the way they offer free items.
They also state the mattress should never be turned. Interesting that.

Right the warranty side is a bit funny. Reading their discription of each mattress only the deluxe version comes with a 15 year warranty then further in the book it reads all mattress are covered by a 15 yr limited guarantee. I wonder whats limited?
Also if you buy the Tempur bed base with their mattress it too is covered by a 15 guarantee with no mention of limited with this guarantee. It does not state what guarantee the bed base would have if bought by its self.
They also have an offer where on a leaflet you see the words '2 free pillows**'
Then you have 'buy now & receive 2 free pillows**'  with ' purchase a Tempur mattress and get 2 pillows of your choice absolutely free'

Great this looks good but hold on the small print, thats those lovely little words that are hard to read wink wink tells me it subject to availability and the deluxe pillows are not included. Also the 2 free pillows are on offer if a 4ft 6'' or larger mattress is bought. If you buy a 3ft or smaller mattress you only get 1 subject to availability. Don't you just love the small print.

As I'm a fussy git the whole leaflet is so badly designed I could not believe it. They use light coloured fonts on a light background making the reading of their leaflet very hard for me and this included their order form. If you had problems with your eyes then forget it, its that bad!! My father could not read it apart from the finance section which is a black font on a white background, very nice marketing where its made to catch your eyes.
Now for a company that spends millions on development and working with hospitals and medical associations why oh why is there no thought about the ease of reading a plain and simple leaflet. Very poor marketing.

Perhaps a topper would be a better option for my father.

I hope you don't mind me ranting, guess as I am fast approaching 40 I'm turning into a grumpy old man :)
- By ali-t [gb] Date 14.10.07 19:44 UTC
toppers can be bought fairly cheaply so it might be worth trying one out for him as the tempur mattresses are really dear if he doesn't like the feel of it.  I originally only bought a topper to test it out and I have the occasional panic that the dog might pee the bed and ruin it.  she hasn't done this for years but I'd hate to spend a fortune on a mattress that might end up stinking of pee.  Probably not relevant for you but something else to think about.

Thanks Cheeky. Made me giggle with the thought of my Newfie on my fathers bed and father on the sofa:eek: Mind you it might be worth a laugh :)

To be perfectly honest I don't think the Tempur are worth the money! I bought a mattress topper earlier in the year(has to be 3in or deeper to be of benefit)...or rather hubby bought it for me! As you may know I am absolutely riddled with Arthritis...having had major spinal fusion done, 2 hips and a knee replaced in the last 2 years...and at age 47! Anyhoo, I got a 3in topper for kingsize off e-bay, if you want the addy PM me, with a cover for less than £120! Covers are very expensive and these folk have excellent feedback, I would certainly select one for a 'try see' rather than spend hundreds on something else first! if you need any more help PM me hun, all the best, Dawn xx

and another thing...those beds that Gloria Hunniford advertises...well, I had them round for a demo and it took me 4 HOURS to get rid of them...talk about hard sell....lines like...just think how much your comfort is worth to you, don't you value getting a good nights sleep?? How can you afford NOT to feel better etc etc etc:rolleyes::mad:

I've had a tempur mattress for 3 years, dh & I are on the opposite ends of the scales so it's perfect for us.  I didn't get on with the pillows though.  The mattress takes a while to get used to as you can't "bounce" yourself over to your other side like a normal mattress.
Some magazines do a 30 or 60 or 90 day trial (forget which no. of days!) money back guaranteed etc.

Would phone tempur direct & not get involved with the middle man.

We have one and I swear by it, the only thing I have found though is that I wake up very sweaty at times as it tends to hold the heat but saying that I am not sure if it's me or the bed causing the problem. Best nights sleep we have had for years on it. Have the pillows too and they are magic

Just wanted to thank everyone again for all your help.

My father can't make his mind up on a bed and in good old style is now looking into cookers:eek:

Big hug to all X X X

i am looking to buy a new bed  and have also been looking at memory foam. however can only afford the ones with the springs aswell. are these any good. each shop you go in tells you that they are brilliant but then they would, has anybody got one of these beds.
- By LJS Date 25.10.07 22:33 UTC
I have just bought a new mattress which is memory foam and also has coolmax which is supposed to help control your temperature. It was retailing at £499 but got it for £199 so quite chuffed  Looking forward to a good and comfortable nights sleep :D
- By LJS Date 15.11.07 09:09 UTC
Folks I have a question. Did any of your memory foam matresses have a very chemical smell when you got it ? Ours came in a big roll. When we undid it the smell was very strong  The notes that came with it was to air it for a couple of days and the smell should go. We have done this but the smell is still there although not as strong. I have rung the company and they have said it will take a few weeks to go  They have assured me that it is not all all toxic and won't have any effects healthwise

I am not convinced :)

Hi Lucy

Yes, ours was a wee bit smelly but only for 24 hours or so, but I did put a mattress cover over it - even although it already has one.

I think they are the best things ever, I can't believe the difference, no more burning lungs every morning :)  We went away last weekend and spent 2 nights at a travelodge, I couldn't wait to get back home to my memory mattress.

Oh yes, it's amazing, it's the best 350 pounds we have ever spent :)  Before I was waking up ever 1-2 hours with the pain in my ribs/lungs now I manage to sleep 4/5 hours straight through and I don't have to take any painkillers before going to bed now - we have had ours for 6 months now.  I think it must have something to do with the pressure I used to have on my lungs when I slept on my side, whatever it is I love my memory mattress :D :D :D

Hope you and yours are well and settled into your new home. :)

No, no-one recommended getting one.  It was desperation! ;)

Glad you love your new home, we moved two and a half years ago now and I still call this our new house :D  We have just had a conservatory built on, it's great, I can see that's where Barney and I will be spending most of our time, well, all our time actually. ;)  :)

Yes, even my mattress topper had a really strong chemical smell, I couldn't decide if I slept so well the first night because it was so comfy or because I was knocked out by the smell :D It took a week or so to go completly, I used to take the sheet off in the morning and open the windows so it had a good air :)
- By LJS Date 15.11.07 10:19 UTC
Yes that is what I have been doing but it has been chuffing freezing so have only had the window open a little bit

I know what you mean about the smell knocking you out ! I have had some very interesting dreams :D :D

There is a mattress cover on it so may take that off and give it a good wash. The only problem is the tumble drier decided to pack up yesterday as well
- By ali-t [gb] Date 15.11.07 10:56 UTC
I have bought 2 toppers and one mattress over the years for the house but have never had a chemical smell from any of them but I know someone who has had a really bad experience.  the difference appears to be that hers was shrink wrapped and none of mine were.  She was told that the glue between the foam and the mattress bit does stink and also that they are wrapped after being sprayed in flame retardent.  She became ill immediately with the smell and had to put it in the garage until it could get collected by the firm.  It appears to depend on where you buy them.

I work for a mobility company that sell "memory foam" mattresses and adjustable beds as well as other things.

I would not recommend a Tempur bed as many of our customers have had a lot of problems with the beds themselves, the customer service and the foam sagging etc.

We use in our mattresses a product called "Vasco" which is a type of Memory Foam that is NHS approved. The mattresses, if bought from where I work, come with a lifetime guarantee, never need turning, are anti-dustmite and are available with optional massage (fantastic for circulation, arthritis etc :) )

We also do the toppers with massage too but I personally wouldn't go for one of them as you still have your old, sprung mattress underneath. I would never go for a sprung mattress again - the foam has worked wonders for my many back problems. I am only 25 and have sciatica, a damaged coccyx and reactive arthritis and it has been much better since having the mattress :) I'm not so keen on the massage though - it works for many people but gives me a headache!!

I was talking to the Professor who I am under at the moment with my back and he has said that where as most people get on with memory mattresses in the main in some cases it can make matters worse.

We have had ours for about two weeks now and must admit I am sleeping a lot better but no change to the pain.

So what is the option massage ?
