Hi,

we are thinking of adding a wet food to our cavvies dry diet. He is on science plan natures best and has been doing well on it but he seems bored of it!

Having previously seen posts about the above 2 foods we thought we might give them a go but it would appear neither do a puppy food?

Our cavvy is 8 months old can he eat the normal one or should we try something else?

He can eat the normal one.He's at an age now where puppy food isnt as vitally important. You dont have to limit yourself to commercial food add in's.You could mix in fresh foods like chicken,beef,lamb,cottage cheese,yogurt,scrambled or raw eggs,healthy left overs from your meals,a few steamed veggies and fruits every now and then.The list is endless :D

My dogs will eat a bowl of plain dry food,but i rarely give them just that.I always mix in something with their dry food,and they get raw meaty bones on a daily basis.

Is there a list of foods that i can get anywhere of the foods that would be ok to eat?

I must admit to being a bit scared when it comes to human food!:rolleyes:

I don't comment on your food posts very often Ktee for some reason they just seem to say the same thing over and over again and in my opinion ( a word you seem to forget to use and should really start using :-D )with no real substance behind them to be honest.  I always get the feeling from your post nobody feeds their dogs like Ktee does :-D  hmmmm..  I often wonder what other thing you could plow all this repeatedly used energy into :-)

Some dogs happily eat the same food all their lives and you will find that is probably the most common.

Whilst I feed my dogs a varied diet most raw foods dogs or anyone cannot "utterly" crave what they have never had. :-)

Is that "in your opinion", is it? Well i beg to differ :) IMO :) Any person or creature which has evolved to eat real food will crave it and need it,whether they have never been given it or not.

Yes you're right :( But i'm not sure how happy they are about it,they just have no choice..Eat it or starve!

Angels dont think of it as "Human food".Fresh,real foods should be available to everyone,not just to be reserved for humans.Our dogs deserve fresh foods too :)

And dogs DO know what they're missing. They smell "people" food, see you eating it etc. IMO it's really depriving them by only feeding them kibble for their entire lives.

We're all a little battle weary and could do with the good that you give..not the bad.

Have you also considered Forthglade.  I think they made this kind of vacuum tray food long before the others.  http://www.forthglade.com/

I have emailed tham to see if they stock out here or could deliver and costs etc.

If you like the look of it you can buy Forthglade from a few online retailers. If they don't, one of the other retailers might deliver to your area.

Edited to add: by all means look around and ask your vet if you're unsure but I feed my dogs all sorts of human food. Mostly things with meat, veg, pasta or rice in it. I avoid oinions, grapes, raisins and of course no chocolate. I don't give them anything with sugar either.

Naturediet do a puppy food, although not sure up to what age.

both are good foods.  I personally prefer natures menu as it is a nicer consistency and I find it easier to get all of the flavours.

PAH do quite a lot of these wet foods so worth a trip there.

Wish i could pop to pah....

As far as i can see we only have one stockist over here and they only do 2 flavours of the adult but no puppy version:rolleyes:

Many local pet stores will order things in for you. If they already buy the adult version they might get the puppy for you.

I've had a bad experience with naturediet - mucusy horrid poo's, but no problems with natures menu but then I have heard some people have had bad experiences with natures menu...........both are equally nutritious I believe - (I'm no expert). I suppose it's trial and error really - One point however, naturediet stinks to high heaven and makes me gag yet natures menu smells almost good enough to eat  :D

I wouldn't worry about the puppy version - I'm sure the adult one will be fine at 8 months as your dog is a small breed and your only going to be adding a bit to the dry food. I was instructed by my vet to change Harvey over to adult food at six months as the protein level is lower and he had runny stools when fed the puppy variety

Well we gave our boy natures menu mixed in with his dried food and i have never seen him eat so quickly!!

He has never just eaten his food when i have put it down but he ate it all and licked the bowl!

Ifeed my dogs on a good complete food with a small amount of natures menu mixed in and they are doing really well on it, Hope your boy continues to enjoy it.

hmm i think i spoke too soon, he was sick tonight after he ate his dinner!:rolleyes:

We have changed his diet several times and i think that maybe we need to persevere with the one he's on but take it up quicker as we tend to leave it down for a lttle while so maybe if he's hungry enough then he'll eat it?

Maybe you gave too much too soon? You only want to add about a teaspoon really on the first day given his small size, then gradually add a tiny bit more day by day.

Have you added the new food really gradually over several days, increasing a tiny bit at a time? If not, that may be the problem. :)

Yes he only had a small amount although it was more than a teaspon so i will reduce the amount even further and see if this makes any difference!

Perhaps its just the fact that he's eaten all up with gusto that's made him sick - if he doesn't normally eat up all at once? Also, did you reduce his dried food slightly to allow for the wet?

Yes maybe that is the case he has certainly never eaten like that before!

Well he has been ok for the past couple of days we've had no sick (thank goodness) and he still seems to love it!

I wish they did smaller pouches though as i hate putting it in our fridge and i'm sure it can't be as nice eating it cold!!

you can take out of the fridge about 10 mins before you want to use it or you could always microwave it for about 5-10 secs just to take the chill off - we do this with our cat food!

I'm quite scepitcal about microwaving food (bit of a nutrition freak!) but i will take it out of the fridge a bit earlier so it can warm up a bit although in this weather who knows!!:rolleyes:

Angels just sit the pouch in a bowl or measuring jug of warm (not hot) water..this'll take the edge off :)
(The vomiting (active) was very likely more regurgitating (passive).. to be expected if food was bolted down)

Does anyone else's dog poo more frequently on wet food than dried only?

too much waste cuold be because too much food is being fed or because the food is slightly wrong for him. i feed Nature dietbut am quite mean with portions, prefering to have a lean slighty wanting dog than a completely satisfied lazy dog ( i hate seeing fat dogs). she is far more active and attentive to me this way espceially when training with extra treats. because her body needs to process all the food i feed, she only poos small bullets.

Thanks for reply but he is off wet food now and just eating his dry and his poo is fine.

:rolleyes: what is he like!! I would persevere with the dry then. I read somwhere recently - don't know if it was on here or another site that if a dog goes off their dry food, try adding a tiny bit of sunflower oil out of a can of tuna?? Might be worth a try if his lordship gets bored again  ;)

We have been giving him left overs aswell like salmon etc every few days so i think that has helped and i'm glad to have that food out of my fridge it made me gag!!
