Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Canine Herpes Vaccination (Question)

We are in a breed where we often go to the Continent to use stud dogs with our bitches.  We have used the canine herpes vaccination as a precautionary measure in these cases.  This has been since about 2003 that we have been using the vaccine.  Since then the bitches that we have had vaccinated have been having very small litters or none at all after future matings.  If anybody out there has been using the vaccination in the same way as ourselves we would be very glad to here from you.  That includes if you have had good litters or small or no puppies at all.  Bitches that we have not vaccinated appear to still be normally fertile

I too use the vaccine, as a matter or course, precautionary... I can only vouch for two of my girls girls, my other girls  have only been mated just the once, but I  mated Tia for the second time.. and without the CHV since it was impossible to source... her 1st litter with the vaccine was 10 good strong healthy pups.. her 2nd litter without the vaccine was 9 pups, lost one due to cleft palate, but remaining 8 are again,, good strong healthy pups.. Emma had a litter of 3 pups without the vaccine, and her second litter was also 3 pups, with the vaccine... she simply produces small litters, but her ovulation dates were very different each season.. and premating her was quite vital...

I do think the vaccine helps protect the pups and gives some cover but I cant see that it can or does affect fertility.. could be down to differing ovulation dates and timing.. or simply that as your girls get older, her fertility is declining.. quite normal really...

Hi Kay
Thanks for you reply.  Good to here that you are OK.  You cannot source it at the moment as it is not being produced.  The manufacturer says they are unable to produce.  I have been informed from the continent that they have had problems in Belgium and Norway but am unable to find any details at the moment. (Although I am trying)  Any stock that vets may have I think is old stock.
Best wishes for Your future breeding.  Our six generation Ch bitch line seems to have come to a standstill.  I sincerely hope it is only temporary.

I've used this but had problems with my bitch/litter. I know of many people who have used this in my breed and have never had a problem in fact a vet in my breed swears by it and says that it increases litter size if anything.  If you need any further information pm and I'll give you his website
