How do people feel about the dentist? I am terrified. I am having 2 teeth out on Monday and I will be having a valium injection to calm me. When my daughter had to have a tooth out I passed out I am so scared. I will be glad when it is all over.:-(

OK, I"m weird. I like going to the dentist! Not completely mad, I don't enjoy getting my teeth drilled but am not bothered about it - but I love to get my teeth cleaned. They feel so good when you leave. :-D

edited to add - they put me under to have my teeth out so it wasn't bad at all (7 removed when I was 15). I hope things go well for you. I'm sure they will. :) see, got so excited about teeth cleaning I forgot to wish you luck!

Petrified Jane. Absolutely petrified. I took my son a couple of weeks ago (after months of trying to find one for him) He only had a check-up but I thought I was going to be sick. I also had a check-up and sat there shaking like a leaf, trying to sound like all was fine so as not to pass on my fear to my son. Turns out I need a filling, but I know what I'm like I'll not go until I'm in agony with it and my mother drags me there by the ears. Totally and utterly ridiculous I know!

Doesn't help that my sister is a dental nurse and is always nagging me!
I love spiders, I used to own tarantulas, snakes and giant insects - all the usual phobias! But dentists - bleuurgh.

*runs off to quiver and find a happy place* :D :D :D

I have had loads of work done............to me dentists are ££££££
I am not frightened of any of it though, as probably have sat so much in 'the chair' and am quite confident that there really is nothing to worry about!

Jane

I had a tooth out a couple of months ago.  Prior to this the last one I had out was 10 years ago and it was a dreadful experience so I was scared to death.  However, I was pleasantly surprised how quick and easy it was this time, I didn't feel a thing and was amazed when I saw he had it out.  I wouldn't worry nearly so much in the future, I think things have moved on in leaps and bounds in dentistry making it a much more bearable visit these days.

I have recently spent a fair bit of time at the dentist.

Have had a few fillings and a wisdom tooth out.
I was nervous before i had the wisdom tooth out, but these days they are so good at giving injections (you can't feel the injection going in for the normal ones) and for the last filling, I didn't even know exactly where he was working in my mouth :P

With the wisdom tooth, I felt some pulling but it was nothing, no more than what you would do to yourself really if you were fiddling with it.
Some bone came out with it which is normal but he was very careful and took his time, and I felt OK and was back to normal soon after :)

I have to have one more filling and a more complex treatment plus some whitening on a tooth that was damaged when I was in an accident.
So a few more visits yet. I guess it may come down to trusting one's own dentist, as a professional having pride in his work, and also of course "bedside" manner.

My Dentist won't let me have the laughing gas because I hyper-ventilate and would get too much of it.  I only keep up my regular appointments because I'm even more afraid of what might happen if I neglect my teeth.

Hi jane,
the valium will help a lot make you much less anxious, I am really scared of blood tests and a while ago had to have them weekly for a long time:eek: the only way I got through it was to think while I was shaking in the waiting room that however bad I feel now, in half an hour I will be on my way home and it will be over and the nurse knows exactly what she is doing and I wont die from it. think to yourself, on Tuesday it will be all over. if you have a daughter you have been through much worse pain! by the way the only painful bit is the injection and that isnt bad. I am a dental nurse and most people are scared but what is going on in your mouth is never as gory as you think! try and relax if you can although it may sound impossible, as soon as you start to panic you will make yourself worse.

Hi Jane, like you and so many other I'm petrified but I go every 6 months for my check up, I am sedated for all treatment though.  I've sat in with Hannah having fixed braces on, treatments in between fixed off and now her maintenance checks, hate it but would never let her see this.  Sedation is for me.  I'm sure you'll be ok and stay as calm as possible and use some breathing relaxation exercises to get you into the place it's what I do. x

Well today is the big day. I feel dreadful. I haven't slept well and I have a bad head, I am hoping it doesn't become a migraine. I have to go at 9am this morning as I have to have impressions so that the teeth can be put onto a plate then I have to go again at 3pm to have my teeth out and they will put my plate straight in. It is going to be a very looong day. I intend to keep myself very busy. I feel such a baby and all I want to do is cry! I really need to grow up!!!!

no jane, you're fine, don't be hard on yourself for your fear, keep it rational though and like you say keep yourself busy, I'd be the same as you if that's any consolation to you.  I'll be thinking of you x

Thats the first appointment over. Have asked if I can take my migraine meds as I can feel one looming. He said that was fine and that I can drink as much water as I want to prevent dehydration as that adds to headaches. Will be so glad when its over. Thank you Craigles it makes me feel better when someone understands.

Oooh poor you, migraine I do know too!
Just think on to the outcome of this work.........it will be fantastic.
I am about 3 or 4 months into having had major work and it so nice to just relax and smile again, knowing my teeth look reasonable again and there should be no reason to worry again for such a long time.

Yaaay!!! Its all over. I am a bit sore this morning but I still feel better than yesterday. As they have been added to an existing plate I'm not sure that the "bite" is right but I will wait for any swelling to subside and then see how it is. The same thing happened once before and my dentist filed some off and they were fine. Feel so relieved today its unbelievable. Have a good day everyone.

Oh good for you Jane :) I am absolutely, utterly petrified of dentists, the smell of them gives me the hebe jebee's
The last time i visited a dentist was 24 years ago.I had a filling done and my sister, laughing her guts out the whole time, plus a nurse had to hold me down.
The thought of having a tooth pulled,an injection or even a descaling done makes me feel sick.. If i ever have to go to the dentist i hope there is a way they can knock me out cold,so i can sleep through the whole thing.

I noticed there are a couple of dental nurses on the board,i was hoping you could maybe let me know what this lump was i had in my mouth a few weeks ago? It started off as a small lump right next to one of my back teeth(on the gum),and by that night it was a big lump.OH said it looked like an abcess, but i thought they hurt? This one didnt. Anyway the next part is gross, sorry :o I saw it had puss in it,so i pricked it with a needle and squeezed it out,and then it disapeared. There was no pain at all..Any ideas what this could have been?

hi Ktee, I'm not a dental nurse but maybe it was a gum boil. The valium injection that I have although it doesn't actually put you to sleep the sedative effect means that you can't remember anything. I can recommend it. I don't have any treatment without one. I had an abcess about 11 years ago, we were on holiday and it completely ruined it because I was in so much pain. I had to go to the dentist when we got home and I hadn't been for 10 years. I ended up having 9 teeth out! That was my first experience of a valium injection. I still am petrified of the dentist and I feel physically ill on the day of treatment but the valium means that I am able to go and get it done.

hi ktee in simple terms it sounds like an abcess that has found an exit route outside the bone so forming a gum boil. an abcess hurts because of pressure when the pus cant escape. so although it isnt painful the source of infection is still there:eek: to be a bit too serious for a moment the most important reason to visit the dentist is to check for changes in the soft tissues; gums, cheek and tongue for early signs of disease so please everyone (especially smokers) pluck up courage for a check-up as it could save your life:cool:
