Long story, but a friend of a friend bought a young dog yesterday as I had already made preliminary enquiries for him and knew the breeding etc. The owner has a litter of pups sired by him ready to go but she has hung onto the KC reg paper (he was advertised as KC reg)so she can register the pups and then she will forward. For one, I would have thought they should already have been done, unless she has another litter due, but my thoughts are as long as she has the KC name and number, she signs the form as the owner of the dog at time of mating and that is all the details she requires. She could have scanned or photocopied the front.
He didnt get it in writing that paperwork would be forwarded and I am a bit concerned as I cant see any reason to need to hold onto it as all she needs is the above details. My advice has been to phone her before time goes on - he hopes to train the dog and run him in novice trials next year and obv cant if not KC in his name..
What do others think - is there any genuine reason you can think of why she needed to hold on to the paperwork for 'a while' - I cant..

Run! Run, as fast as you can.

Sounds fishy to me!  If I don't have the paperwork there ready for the new pups owners we both sign documentation to say that it will be sent as soon as it's received.

I can't either unless she is planning on using this dogs paperwork on maybe another unregistered male dog so she can use him at stud?    I would get the friend of a friend to phone SKC maybe and explain the situation, see what they have to say?

Well, the dogs got a really good home as a house dog and I suppose not end of world if he is a shooting dog only and the paperwork doesn come through but I hate to see people being done over like a kipper...I have the sellers contact and email so I will wait to see what happens when he phones her, if no joy then I think I will be giving chapter and verse on KC rules for reg pups..
Christine - yes - I think everything is well dodgy and I think the plan is probably to have a set of spare paperwork..I must find the ad, just in case the name of Trading Standards needs to be dropped in..

Just to add you can still register a litter by a dog even if transfer to a new owner has been made because the KC do it via the time of mating and not by who now owns the dog.

thx for that - yes - thats just confirms what I thought - its the owner of the dog at the time of mating...

If that doesn't work, could your friend not just register the dog on the activity register?  I'm only familiar with this (ish) for agility/obedience but just a thought.

Have to be on the Breed register to compete in FIELD Trials.

I really don't see why she cannot demand the KC registration, in fact, I don't think she should accept anything less. Definitely go down the route of Trading Standards is she can't get anywhere with the breeder, but I certainly hope you find the advert as that will help her case immensely.

Wish I had gone with them..I wouldnt have left without the KC reg certificate...I feel quite bad as it was me that drew their attention to the fact he was for sale..On the bright side, I have found the advert. I dont know whether I should email the seller (who is not the breeder) or stay out as I suppose not really my business although I helped her get the sale in a roundabout way...I hate when people that dont breed and arent 'up' on KC things get messed about like this:mad:

Well I don't think you can take the blame on this one. You found them a nice dog but had no control over the seller and the new owner hasn't understood the procedure. At least one thing, if the seller becomes awkward then Trading Standards will be able to have a field day as you have the advert. I think this person will back down when Trading Standards are mentioned but hopefully it won't come to that.

are you sure she has even registered them yet? can you get someone to check the breed register or better still if you know the KC name of the DAM then ring the KC and they will tell you if the registrations have been done........i had a problem a few years ago as i sent the reg off puppies 5 weeks old.................they came back 4 times in a row with mistakes, even after me phoning them and pointing out American cocker cannot be registered as black and gold ! names were spelt wrong dogs with bitches names etc etc....so it went on........pups didnt get their correct registrations until 4 days after they left me! i now do it after pups are 2 weeks old to make sure but it could all be verified by ringing the KC so i wasn't too worried about it but i'd ring them if it were me

As I understand it the buyer has bought a young dog that has sired a litter, not a puppy, so therefore he will have been registered when he was a puppy. Unless I am wrong.
