Just wondered if this might not be a great idea to keep cats and foxes out of your garden, and also those who would like to keep cats safe but still allow them to come and go from house to garden.  Also for those escapologist canines.

Is that a very fat terv in the video?

Very similar to this product.

Well I wonder which company will/did get the patent?  I am surprised the dog fencing people haven't got hold of the idea.  It would have been a real boon for me when I had my leaping Belgian as her fence leaping was legendary and led to her death.

I had ended up with 7 foot gate and wire overhang, and she then proceeded to test the rest of the fences which were 6 foot.  Ended up using a tie out chain on which she nearly hung herself one until I worked out the length that wouldn't reach any boundary on a running line.  I only used this when I couldn't keep watch on her, and the day she died I thought her safe to have loose as I was in the kitchen watching, nope she went over.

Don't think there is anything worse than living with a determined and crafty escapologist.

What started her doing ti was not boredom, but fear.  she was afraid of fireworks and hot air balloons, helicopters etc.  Living in Bristol these are very common.

I know of someone with exactly the same problem - her dog is terrified of hot air balloons. What can happen is that that fear can generalise so that every noise can become terrifying, and even things associated with it - in this instance cut grass and children playing - can be associated with it. Ultimately the dog can be afriad of almost any noise. These days we are learning more about how to help dogs who suffer from these problems but it's a horrible problem :(

Sounds as if your Groen would have done well at working trials over that 6ft scale, Barbara

I know you've mentioned her before but again, sorry you lost her under sad circumstances.

Quite hard work for a first time dog, but we loved her.

Learnt a lot from her, especially how to avoid some of the problems we had with her, like screaming like a banshee the moment she heard the click of my next door neighbours back door.  Learnt not to accentuate her fears and to lessen them by warning her of events, like saying 'say hello' before someone touched her, or show teeth etc.  Allowing her time out when I could tell she was getting beyond coping with kids etc.

Oh brilliant and that one in the UK! This is worth thinking about.

The American version seems to be rather sturdier.

With a huge shipping rate to boot!!!!!   ;)

Well that would be the same both ways.  wonder if anyone else here is making metal version rather than the wooden poles in the UK version.

It seems to me it would not take a great deal of ingenuity to fashion something yourself out of plastic piping over some form of pole, either metal or wood.

The main problem would be to ensure it rolled.  I thought of Fence wire stretched with plastic pip over it, but would it not just hang there?

Thankfully fingers crossed I don't have any dogs with escapist tendencies in my Elkies, Jozi just waits fort me to let her go myself and then bogs off once she has lulled me into a false sense of security.

For the last seven years I have been promising her that she would not be let off lead ever again.

I don't think it would roll reliably Brainless.

You would need to have another rod inside the plastic pipe in order for the outer pipe to roll. Maybe some metal tubing such as from an old frame tent or some old copper piping would do for the inner section with plastic plumbing pipe for the outer tube. :)

I am surprised it isn't something that has really been thought of much here.

With urban foxes, cats etc, as well as wanting to keep your own animals in within the allowable height of fencing at 2m.

I am glad my present dogs can be contained by that height (though I know they can clear that height as a breed) and even respect 4 foot barrier fence accross the garden.
