Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Getting dog to chew offal/bones

My dogs are on a complete dry diet with the odd extra. I like them to have something they can chew occasionally for their teeth, and since bones tend to give the gsp colitis I got some ox heart. They got 1/4 heart each - gsp wolfed his down - he loves anything like that - but the flat coat just stood and looked at his sadly. It was the same last time I got bones (first time I'd tried f/c with them), Duibh just stood and looked at it sadly and wouldn't try it - but he got the runs shortly after, so I put it down that time to feeling under the weather.  He's fit and healthy apart from his leg, mouth is fine apart from a bit of tartar (since he won't chew!).

Has anyone else had this problem - and is there any way of encouraging dogs to chew? Would it work if I cut it up with some small and big pieces, or is he just never going to take to it?

Dogs do not chew.  Look at their teeth, their molars are not flat like ours or cows, horses etc, they are designed to rip, slice, tear and swallow.

Two of mine will eat raw meat/offle but Pepsi refuses piont blank to have anything raw in her mouth....Except for her tripe... If you throw her a piece of meat and she catches it without realizing it's raw she will pull horrible faces and spit it out....cooked is fine but the only raw meat she will touch is tripe.

Chew [from concise OED] : "work (food etc) between the teeth; crush or indent with the teeth." It does not specify HOW the food is chewed. ;)

My older dog didn't like raw meat when it was first offered - he would take it to his bed and roll on it :D Perseverance won in the end - however he refused to eat raw liver. The answer was to put it in the blender with some raw carrot - now he can't wait to eat it :) Our younger dog had raw meat from a pup and never knew anything different really, so was not a problem :)

Have you tried giving raw, minced meat - for example the Prize Choice frozen meat ??? It may go down better being minced :)

I had a try again today - and it went down a treat   I did cut a few bits smaller, and the only other difference was I'd put the packet with the heart in into some hot water to warm it up a bit - maybe he just likes it warm. :D After all it would naturally be at body temperature I suppose :)
