Topic Dog Boards / General / Rottweiler dog or bitch???
- By Jewel [gb] Date 20.01.07 08:21 UTC
Hello,

I wondered if some Rottie owners out there would give me their opinions on the temperament difference between the sexes please??
Are boys more difficult then girls?? I have always thought they they were pretty much the same really and in fact from those I have known I have found the boys to be more loving and loyal. Are either more difficult to train in your opinions??? Would both make an equally trustworthy family pet??

Thankyou
Jewel

I think the main obvious difference is the size of the males. I have owned both sexes and found although I rehomed my male at 12 mths (due to my own ill health) he was kind and gentle just like my female was at that age. However having seen other males (older) they are funny with other males. Also if you watch some of the older dogs around the ring the dogs will eye ball each other which the females don't. Of course this is probably due to being stud dogs.
My female was sweet and excellent with people, children and all other animals (dogs, cats, chickens, sheep, pigs even a hamster).
I love the males but for me I'd probably get another female over a male.
Why not visit lots of breeders at home and at shows and meet all their dogs. I did this yrs ago and you will see the differences but you will also decide on a breeder too. Whatever you choose of course, choose temperament!!!

I have two dogs (both entire) and two bitches (one entire) personally I would advise you to have a female if it is your first rott' as they do seem to be a bit easier. Both my males are much harder work, as they seem to have higher 'play' modes, where-as my girls are qute happy to just with with me or my OH. For the record, none of them are related, so it's not down to the breeding.

Remember aswell, that males do tend to be more aggressive if the owner allows them, and that is the last thing you need. Esp' with the media coverage around again. Bitches seem to be easier to train, but it all depends on the lines etc. If you would like some advice on where to go for a pup, please email me.
