Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog hit by van when on lead.

I took my son to a rugby match this morning and saw a lady who I see alot walking her dog, Storm, a lab about 3 years old, and we have done some work for in the past. When we see each other we have a good old natter about dogs,
On Thursday night, Richard her 16 1/2 year old son was walking Storm along the main road at 6 oclock at night. Storm was on the inside away from the road on a short lead. The dog was good on the lead aswell.
In a split second he darted in front of richard to the roadside and was hit by a van. Killed out right. No marks on him or anything.
It was not Richards fault, he was doing everything correctly.
This is the reason why you should never walk a dog on a loose or extendable lead or off lead. it only takes a split second.
RIP Storm.

What a sad story.:-( So you say the dog was on a short lead - so how did that happen:confused: It's not an issue of extending leads here, is it:confused:

Lea said the dog just quickly darted infront of the boy - even short leads are long enough for a dog to move from one side of a pavement to the other if they aren't being held tight and if the dog just moved off the edge of the pavement at the wrong time when a van was passing close to the edge, that's all it takes I guess.  With regards to the extending lead I think Lea was just trying to get a point across, if it can happen to a dog on a short lead then it's a lot easier on an extending lead!!  So sorry to hear of your friends loss, the young lad must feel terrrible.

Thanks Karen, yes thats what I was getting at, but you put it alot bettr than me!!!!
The dog was still on the pavement when he got hit, his head was probably(Only speculating knowing the road)just over the edge and the van was driving close to the kerb.
The van went before my friend got there so she doesnt know anymore (He did hang around after he knew the dog was dead (The vet was called out) as there was nothing he could do and it wasnt his fault)

My oldest bitches Mums litter brother was killed like this when on lead next to owners house while they got him out of the car, there was no pavement and the car that hit him sped past too close.  The dog had doen really well at shows winning a CC and RCC's and was jut two years old I think.

My friends neighbour lost her dog similarly on the grass verge outside their cottages.  Whilst the drivers are not, technically, at fault I think a good driver would allow far more margin for error when passing pedestrians.

Makes me feel sad all over again for an accident we saw about 35 years ago, from our car.  Mum, Sis and I saw a teenage boy walking his Irish Setter along the sidewalk, off leash.  It was such a pretty sight, Sis and I turned to look out the back window as we passed and I think Mum was checking the rear-view mirror.  So we all saw the dog give one big bound out into the roadway and get hit.  The man that hit the dog stopped but the dog was lying flat on the ground.  Maybe he lived, sure didn't look like it though.  To make things sadder for us, it was right beside a cemetary and we were on our way home from one of Mum's cancer treatments.  We were in the mood already to feel sad (Mum's OK though, now 88 years old - Breast Cancer CAN be beaten) and I feel it all over again with stories such as this.  Sadder for you as you knew the dog and owner.
