I realise that dogs who are registered with the Kennel Club have their pedigree certificate issued via the KC. Does anyone know what other sort of "papers" a puppy may be issued with and any idea how I would contact those other organisations ( I know they are not the same as the KC).

The reason I am asking is because we have been trying, unsuccessfully, to trace the breeder of our rescue Golden Retriever who was only 10 weeks old when he was given up to the Dogs Trust and was then rehomed with us. The Trust told us they had seen his "papers" but did not want them as they were of no interest to them for rehoming him and are not able to give us the details of the people who originally purchased him from the breeder.

I have had help on this site from a member who has made enquiries for me through the breed club but, unfortunately, was unable to trace him through the date of birth we were given by the Trust. So I was wondering if the papers the Trust  looked at weren't actually a KC pedigree registeration but some other form of registration  - which I know will have no official standing but may give us a clue as to where we can go next with our search. We would like to know his background  purely out of interest as to his breeding and health of his parents. He was neutered this year in line with the Trust's rehoming policy.

I would be grateful for any help with "alternative registers".

I think it would be a wild goose chase   Personally, I would not be able to set any store by what the "papers" said if issued to A N Other registery.

Just a point that KC registered dogs don't have to have pedigrees issued by the KC. The registration document is certainly issued by them but actual pedigrees are often produced, hand-written or computer-printed, by the pup's breeder. But these can be verified with the KC.

None of 'the other' organisations keep records (they just print certificates according to what the breeder tells them) so wouldn't be able to help you.

Just to say, you don't commonly get a pedigree from the KC. You CAN, yes, but it needs paying extra for, and so I'd say the great majority of breeders just get the registration certificate and then print out a pedigree themselves. (Or in the bad old days we had to hand write them!) Now apart from "alternative" registries, other papers I personally will give out with my puppies will inlcude microchip registration, a contract, all sorts of details like feeding etc, and insurance.

I'd have thought your best bet might be to look at the relevant breed record supplement as it will list all KC registered litters -if you know the date of birth you should be able to get hold of it. But of course there could have been many litters born the same day. Don't forget not all breeders are breed club members. KC publications department can help with the BRS tel. 020 7518 1016.

The BRS is definitely the way to go. There are many Golden Retriever breed clubs and a single breeder is unlikely to be a member of them all; plus of course in such a popular breed as the GR there are probably more litters bred by people who aren't members of any breed club than those who are.

As Goldmali says, contact the KC and buy a copy of the BRS which lists Golden Retriever litters born around the same time as your dog. A bit of sleuthing might turn up trumps!

If you should order the BRS for the approx dates that you have for the birth of your GR and if that should give you the GR litters born on the exact same date that you have or there abouts and even if you can pinpoint it down to a couple of breeders and those breeders are helpful enough to contact their pups owners to find out which one has been passed on, even after all that, you would certainly still have to pay out for a DNA test to make absolutely sure that it is the pup of this particular breeder, as many pups are born and not KC registered but given a pedigree from another organisation, (which is basically worthless) so the breeder would need to be 100% positive it was their pup.

If you should be lucky enough to find him to be a KC pup via the breeder and DNA, then you would need to get the previous owner to sign a transfer of ownership in order for you to then register the pup in your name. The breeder can certainly help you with the family history etc and the health checks but if your pup is not KC reg or traceable, personally I would give up.

If you were planning on breeding or showing I can understand your dediction to find your pups parentage, personally if you can not find your pups D.O.B (which may be wrong) in the BRS I would give up, it would be impossible to trace him.

Another route, now that you have had him neutered, could you not get in touch with the rescue with proof of the neutering as there is no reason now for them not to want you to have the papers, I can understand them not taking the papers originally as they would not want a pup to be used for breeding etc. But the original owner may still have them.

Otherwise, just enjoy him! No point worrying his parentage and their health history, you have him now so all that is too late, just enjoy him! :-)

Your pup couldn't have been with it's new owners very long if you go it at 10weeks old,I can't understand why it wasn't returned to it's breeder if they couldn't cope.

Do you have this pups full name or breeder affix?? It will be like looking for a needle in a haystack otherwise especially with a breed that so many are bred each year.

Good Luck with your search.
