Topic Dog Boards / General / a neutered dog in a tie with an out of season bitch?possible
- By joelol [gb] Date 12.09.06 20:34 UTC
hello

i have a terrier who was neutered at a young age who has never show much interest. also i have a terrier intact bitch who is not due to be in season for around 7 weeks and the day before yesterday i found the 2 dogs in a tie. does this mean the biitch was in season(no sign of colour like normal)  or could she have been mated without being in season?

im confused:confused:

This happened to me -neutered dog tying with bitch NOT in season. Turned out the bitch was on the verge of developing pyometra, we caught it just in time. Might be best to have her checked out unless it's a simple case of her having come into season early.

Dogs can smell changes in biochemistry well before humans notice any physical changes.  (Think about dogs that have been trained to scent cancer in humans.)   So your dog more than likely noticed that your bitch will shortly be in season.   I doubt your bitch would have let your dog penetrate her if she wasn't influenced by changing hormones either.

Also - bitches can sometimes have "silent seasons" with no physical changes, which is another possibility.
