Topic Dog Boards / General / So annoyed - Fireworks

A little earlier I was taking Felix (6 month pup) out to the garden to toilet before bedtime. I went back in the kitchen to get myself a drink and all of a sudden I hear extremely loud fireworks, very close by. Felix came tearing back into the house, obviously terrified :( it took a while for him to calm down (my parents attempted to comfort him but I told them not to - I just stayed with him but acted normal and gave him a few treats) he was backing into the far end of the house with his tail right down between his legs. He has heard fireworks from inside the house before and been fine with them. After this, I don't know how he will react in the future :(
I'm SO MAD  that some stupid, ignorant people could cause my dog to have a firework phobia for the rest of his life. I am really hoping that it wont have affected him too badly.
After about 20 mins when he had been calm for a while I took him outside again and he was fine luckily.

I think he would have been fine if he had been indoors. They just started a few seconds after letting him outside... and then stopped within 2 minutes :(

Are there any new firework regulations coming up? (a ban I hope...)

I wish! I hate the darn things - I've hated them since they became so sophisticated and more dangerous. I don't like having to go and pick up spent rockets from amongst the shrubs and trees before the dog gets them, worry in case one lands on my roof whilst still smouldering - or just as bad, on one of us, and find the constant noise of them around early November very annoying. Children still find it funny to pop bangers through peoples letterboxes in some areas, and there are many elderly people who dread that time of year. It's about time they were only allowed at organised official displays.
Sophie is the first dog we've had that shows alarm when she hears them - she heard the first ones during the world cup and ran all over the house in panic for a long time!

You may have guessed that I don't like fireworks :D :P

I have had them come through the roof of my conservatory. Thankfully it only went through one layer or I would have had a live explosive in my house. I complained to the council and I didn't even get a reply from them. How can it be legal to shoot weapons willy-nilly around a neighbourhood. :-(

you're not on your own-i hate them too, as do the pooches. Bu's not too bad until those really loud bangers go off, then he goes under the dining table. Teka hates all of them, yet she's fascinated by watching them. It throws her off for days. I'm going to try DAP this year-i left it too late last year, but my mum has Teka's brother, and he's scared of planes overheard, thunder, fireworks-any loud bang, and he was much calmer last year when she had the DAP diffuser on.

As you can see from a previous thread Harley and I hate the things.

I had a very similar experience with Tara when she much the same age. Unfortunately our back door wasn't open, so she jumped the side gate (which we had thought was high enough at six months - wrong) and fled into the field next door :( She has been frightened of loud noises ever since, although not as badly now. Management of the problem is all that you can really do - as you have with ignoring him and not reassuring. We find that having loud music/TV when fireworks/thunder is around works well, as does having a 'bolt-hole' such as a covered crate or a table to go under. Others will tell you of what works for their dog, I'm sure :) With firework night coming up, have your 'plan' ready :)

Poor Felix :(

To me that's exactly what they are too! Incendiary devices! :(

And thank goodness people seem to have stopped having them for weddings now - other years we have had them nearly every weekend through the summer.  I was complaining about fireworks a few weeks ago looking for solutions to calm a dog down after the event.   Since the big bang that got my dog to jump over her dog gate she has also learned to open the door and then jump over - I wouldn't mind so much but she raids all the bins and chews my granddaughters toys - she is not to be trusted on her own - not to mention electrics etc.

I love fireworks.......on the 5th of november, organised by public displays ONLY.

Private displays all year round are nt worth it, are horrible and dangerous :(

The World Firework Championship are going on in Blackpool at the moment over several weekends - imagine that!

I have not had my dogs through the firework season yet we will see what happens My other cav was slightly deaf and wouldn't flinch if one went off near him when we were out walking he was my babe.  Really like to see them but I thought they were going to put restrictions on the noise as there is no need for that.
