My stud dog, had a mate from up north. They travelled all the way to London, he sucessfully tied with her, but two days after, he wasnt having any of it, he lick and lick but didnt mount at all. They came back the next 3days, and it wasnt sucessful.

I feel really bad, should i give back them the stud fee as they must have spent ALOT pf money travelling up and down the country.

ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Thank you

Quite simply the bitch was probably spot on the first time so he mated her, and by the next time had gone over, and any sensible stud isn't going to waste his time.

They have had a good mating so what is the problem.  In their position after the occasion he first didn't want to mate her again (after having already done so) I would have accepted his assessment, and not come again.

After all the sperm from the first mating will have been alive and well for at least four days and possibly a week.

One of my bitches had a litter of 15 from one mating.  As your dog has succcessfully mated the bitch, I can see no reason to return the stud fee at the moment.  As to what you do if she turns out not to be in whelp, what have you agreed with the bitch's owner?  I don't understand why the came back after the first failed mating, it sounds like she had gone over.

Is your dog proven? If he is i don't see you have a problem, hes done the deed you are not obliged to offer a second mating (unless you have stated different), but if she misses maybe you could offer them a free mating next time she comes into season?

A stud dog will usually know if a bitch is ready, or 'gone over'. If she isn't presented at the right time then he will not want to mate. I even know a dog who who sniff the bitch, give the owner a looke and walk away. As if he was thinking 'Been there, done that, don't need to do it again!' ;)

My bitches have all had litters after only one mating, so don't worry. I'd wait until the 9 weeks are up, and if she hasn't had pups it's up to you what you decide to do. Most stud dog owners would offer a 2nd attempt at the next season, free of charge. As to returning the fee, I wouldn't expect it to be returned to me if she failed to produce. After all, you are paying for the SERVICE, not a litter of pups. It might not be the dogs fault that puppies are not forthcoming. One of my bitches was srved twice as she didn't fall pregnant the first time. I went back for a 2nd attempt and still didn't have pups. No money changed hands the 2nd time, but if I had gone back for a 3rd attempt I would have expected to be charged again. I had already dediced not to try a 3rd attempt so it never really came up in conversation, but why should I get 3 attempts, but only pay for 1? JMHO. :)

I must be a soft touch as I wouldn't and won't accept a stud fee if the bitch didn't have puppies - and I haven't charged the full amount if the bitch has a very small litter.

Ridgielover, i thought the bitch determined how many pups she has , not the stud ? so the amount charged is for the mating , not the amount of puppies born .

Like I said - I'm a soft touch!

Tersms seem to be very different breed to breed, In your breed the stud fee is very large if I remember rightly so the outlay is greater, arrangements for payment are generally a bit different.

A lot of small breeds the fee is smaller so you pay at time of mating..
