my old tyme bulldog has been vomiting on and off for the last 6 months. The first time it happened, he ate, and was immediately sick, litterally 10 seconds after finishing. this happened for a couple of days so we went to the vet. he said to starve him for a day, then feed chicken and rice and then reinriduce his normal food. we did this and all was well. a month later and the same thing happened. back to the vets we went. again he said the same thing. starve, chicken and rice, normal food. we did this and the dog was ok. this has happened on two occasions again since then, the last time was 3 weeks ago. on wednesday i came in from work to find two huge pile of sick (his breakfast) on the floor. he had eaten this 6 hours before.
today i fed him at 4 pm and he has just drank a load of water and brought his tea back up.
as i said, at first he was being sick staight away after eating. this time it seems that drinking lots of water is bringing it back up.
when the vomiting first started i was feeding him burns but he went off that. i am now feeding autarky.
any ideas?

maybe try soaking the food first as he will be trying to drink lots of water to replace the lost moisture in the dry food. This will be less stress on his tummy and not having a stomach pump effect when all the water goes in! I would still go back to the vet just to double check everything is fine.
hope things improve for you

Thats whats happening to one of my girls. I took her to the vets today and explained everything, her eating habits/food etc. Told him I also tried soaking her kibble and feeding her raw food but she still does it if she gets too much water whether straight away or 6/8 hours later  He couldn't really say what it was but offered to do an endoscopy/biopsies from her stomach if it carried on (its been this way for at least 6 months) So I'm none the wiser and as she is healthy in every other way I am undecisive as to what to do.
If you do decide to go to your vets, let me know what he/she says.

I agree with soaking the food first add a little boiled water let it soften a little then add a bit of cold give it 5-10 mins to soak before feeding. Have you considered that dry food may not be suitable for your dogs you could possibly try natures menu or something similar. I had a male boy a few years ago who could not eat dry fed soaked or not it took me a long time to sort his food out he eventually was fed Pal in tins for around 10 years of his life we had him for 15 and half years... but it suited him (not one I would recommend unless all else fails)
have you tried feeding smaller meals and often?
If he is still having problems then I would definitely get the vet to take another look if he isnt forthcoming then ask for a referral  (especially if he is insured) or change your vet as there are so many reasons why this is occuring.

hi there,
thanks for your replies. i soaked his food this morning and three hours later, again after drinking lots of water, he brough it all back up. he seems to be drinking a lot more water than he normally does. i will go back to the vet on monday. i may try him on wet food again if all else fails. ive put him on chicken and rice tonight and that has stayed down so far.
thanks again

Get a wee sample and see if they'll do a dip stick test for Diabetes?? Could be that's why he's drinking so much...also can cause vomiting...all the best, Dawn X (Just an idea to rule it out, so don't get hung up about it!!!)

is he also passing a lot of water with all the drinking ?
I have a diabetic cat and a cat with kidney problems both drinking excessively plus vomiting was how we discovered thier illnesses I think you are best to make an early appointment at the vets obviously something is going on!

good luck please keep me informed as it would be interesting to find out what is causing his problems ..poor boy.
