Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Which food

I have an eight month Tibetan terrier who has dried royal canin for breakfast and tinned Hills food for supper.  She has lost interest in breakfast and I am wondering whether to change food.  I would also like to change so that she is on the same make of food for both meals.  She started on Hills dried food for all meals, as suggested by the vet, but that gave her constipation.  Although dried food is obviously easier I am concerend that her constipation will return if she is just on dried food.  I have also read that diet can affect her coat and as she has a thick double coat I wondered if any food was better that others for that.  I would appreciate any advice on the best course of action.  Thanks.

I feed Nutro to my Beardies I have changed over from JWB not too happy with that food but thats another story.

Have you tried wetting the food ...ie:adding a little boiled water let it cool then add a little cold water mix in to make a type of gravy they love it.

I agree with Roni about adding water to the dry food or you could add a little tinned to it,this should help with constipation.I would stay with your current dry food as IMHO the less of any hills product your dog gets the better! :(

What food do you recommend?

Hi Caroline

There are as many opinions on "which food" as there are possible foods themselves!  Why not ask for alternative suggestions from your breeder or if you're a member of the Breed Club from there :)

It's a contentious issue on here - if you use the [search] facility you will find it has been debated at length many times over.

The bottom line IME is that we sometimes have to experiment with foods to find which one(s) our dog enjoys eating and that also keeps the dog in fit, healthy condition :)  When you've discovered a diet regime/routine that provides these needs, then IMO that is the best food for that specific dog!  Don't chop and change too often or too quickly as this will cause tummy upsets and, even if the tummy copes well, will not give you a long enough period to assess if there are any changes for better (or worse) in your dogs over all condition.

regards, Teri

Hi Caroline

I have 4 tibbies and they are all fed on Burns.  Sophie is 13 months now and has a little bit of nature diet mixed with hers.  Because I'm trying to put some weight on her - due to loss of appetite around the time of her season and after - she has 4 meals a day - little and often
