Hi. Your Dobe is too young to have puppies next year, she needs to be at least 2 years old before that decision is made to allow her to grow and fully mature, both physically and mentally. She also needs to have had all her hereditory health checks done-I'm sure there is someone here who knows what the are!- and she needs to be a good , healthy specimen, excellent temperment, just to name a very few things! You also need to work out the total cost of rearing a litter-if all goes well this can easily cost well over £1,000 before any money comes in from sales. Should your bitch need urgent vet treatment this escalates! And, of course, there is the risk of loosing your bitch. I would suggest you read 'The Book of the Bitch before making any furthur decisions. And work out why you want a litter? If you have a good breeder, talk to them about it. If they know their lines well they can advise you which dog would best suit your bitches pedigree etc. There is such a lot that goes in to breeding dogs, and I think until you investigate it fully you cannot be aware.

Hi Paul

As stated above your bitch will be much to young to have puppies next year if she is only 6 months now. I advise that you wait until a bitch is at least 24 months old and if everything is okay, including health tests (at the minimum hip x-ray, eyes for phpv and vWD) are okay then maybe consider mating her on her first season after that.

Mating is not just a case of putting two animals together, getting puppies and selling them, there is a lot more to it than this.

What is your girl's pedigree name?

Things can go wrong. I have just had to have a ceaser for my bitch, that and the Stud fee and other vet costs, and Registration fees have cost £1100. They are only 3 days old, and will cost a lot more to rear! It is a small litter, so I will be well out of pocket, but the reson for breeding is to hopefully breed something that will add to my breeds gene pool, or at the very least produce typical sound companions. this is a hobby, but carries great responsibilities for the individual pups, the breed, and the puppy buying public!

Have you also considered your responsibilities to the puppies. If one of the homes does not work out you will be morrally bound to have the erstwhile pup back. It may through lack of proper socialisation and training be a total hooligan, or god forbid, being a Guarding breed, may have been goaded into aggressive behaviour, for the macho effect. could you face having a pup back that was beyond safe rehabilitation and have to take your baby to the vet to be put down, KILLED!!!

If she is your first Dobermann and only 6 months old please wait.

Take time to learn about our breed - I have had them for 15 years an
been studying them for about 25 - it was a long time before I could
get my first dog, and I still made (and make) mistakes.

Don't rush into anything - the are a powerful and often misunderstood breed
and often need careful handling, or the potential owners do anyway
