ive been doing some research and after talking to the local police station and the uk kennel club i have found out that the american staffordshire terrier is NOT on the dangerous dog list it is NOT a pitbull and they ARE allowed in the uk however they will need to be exported into this country if you wish to obtain one.
however this is the information i have recieved i wouldnt be 100% sure if this is accurate.

Unfortunately it doesn't really work like that. Don't forget there has been purebred, registered Staffies convicted of being of "the type" (as well as many crossbreeds) -it's all down to who reports the dog and what the judge rules in court.........

Until DEFRA (a Government department) change their official leaflet it's sensible to advise people that the name 'American Staffordshire' is listed as another name for pitbull terrier, and it will be down to the views of an individual magistrate as to whether the owner will be permitted to keep the dog.

I don't see any sense in risking the dogs life personally. As I said in the other thread, I know of somebody that imported an American Bulldog from the USA, and they are not on the list either. However this poor bitch was refused entry into the country on the grounds she was a ''pitbull type'' and the poor little mite had to end up in Sweden or somewhere without a bye your leave. It was the dog I felt sorry for, she should never have been put through all that.

Thast terrible  They should really get their stuff together these breeds are not all the same breed reason for American Bulldog ect ect its not a pitt... Not all pitts are bad it all comes down to breeding and how they are raised I really think it foolish to ban a breed because of a human, too bad you just can't ban the human :(

The DDA is, like all hastily enacted "knee jerk" legislation, flawed. But for all that it is the law and, having some knowledge of the case Nursey describes, would simply say that a dog's welfare should come first and it is grossly unfair to fly any dog thousands of miles across the Atlantic (or any other ocean for that matter!) if there is any possibility that DEFRA will categorise it as a "pitbull" type. It's all very well humans standing up to points of principle but you shouldn't be gambling on a dog's future and making it the victim of your principles.
