LOL Books ?

I have a few on dog training & just treated myself to a new(for me)one written by my puppy's breeder, but I've been training my own dogs since 1958 & other people's dogs since 1964. I've trained with some wonderfully gifted natural dog trainers. I've been involved with dog clubs since 1958 too

I've shown a few breeds & handled a lot more in the showring & my first BC born in 1970 took me from a Beginners in Obedience to The Championship classes in just over three years

I've read loads of books on various breeds & better still had the chance to talk at length(& in awe I must add)to some of the most knowledgeable people in dogs

There are  no books that contains the knowledge that years of owning & breeding & training dogs brings

Then of course lots of times I just "flew by the seat of my pants"when faced with a training/behaviour problem

Could not agree more with MM.

Books (some) are great for getting differing perspectives on things, however unfortunately many people assume that because it is in black and white it is all true!  I have been influenced by many books and by many people (often not in the way they imagine) ;)

No one agrees with anybody about ALL things, not even husbands with their wives, and as long as one realises that what they are reading/hearing is only an opinion rather than necessarily fact, it helps keep the balance.  Also, the import that one gives to opinion depends on a number of factors ie whether it is informed or uninformed, what particular empirical experiences the writer/person/trainer etc have had, over what time and with what breeds and in what disciplines etc etc etc.

All the books, degrees, titles etc mean diddly squat without the relevant experience, because I have not found that dogs read books or are overly impressed with letters after one's name! :D

Books are a good place to START ............... (by the correct authors of course) ;)

Learning by experience (and not expecting to get things "right" all the time!) is probably the best way to gain knowledge but I also think the internet is a superb source of material. Every time someone mentions a breed of dog I haven't heard of, for example, I google it up and it's amazing how much useful information is available. There are various good books out there and I'm sure someone can recommend them but do be enquiring about what you read and draw some instinctive conclusions because theories change over time. And remember, your dog hasn't actually read any of the books so won't necessarily perform according to the written word!

It's a bit like having babies really, you can read everything written on the subject but at the end of the day you learn most from the daily experience of raising your own child!

I have at least 6 on my breed alone (probably most of those ever written).  I have various encyclopaedias, behaviour books, Kenenl Club Breed standards and read anything I can get my mits on.

I have stacks of dogs Monthlies, Dogs Todays, two Polish monthly dog magazines, Kennel Gazzettes etc etc.

Then I have the Year books for my breed club going back to the 1930's and all the ones since the 60's.

I would alwyas advice anyone with a serious interest in their breed to join the breed club and get as mush historical publications produced by them as they can.

Not only will this give you articles about the breed, but through adverts by breeders over the years yu can see how particular dogs, lines and the breed as a whole develops.

Also attend seminars, not just those run by your own breed club.

I have attended some fantastic ones run by my regional Doberman Breed club.  The ones on Wobblers, eye diseases and Hd given by experts in their firelds, as well as the ones organised by the Kennel Club for breeders and owners.

The dog papers heve a column each week entitled chances to learn where these seminars and talks are lited.

I read Lassie, does that count?

As many books as you can find! There is no one book that says it all, so you have to read them all!

To start you library I'd suggest you buy as many UK-published books on your particular breed as you can, and search second-hand bookshops for old out-of-print ones. Although a lot of what they say is now outdated they help give an insight into how the breed has developed. Then you can start adding general books on training and behaviour. With those and a couple of good veterinary books you should be on your way.

Basically it is an ongoing proces educating and imersing yorusef in all things canine.  In other countries they have a name for the study and interest in dogs 'Cynology'

Cynology is the study of dogs. The word appears to have been taken into specialised English language usage (i.e., within the community of the canine fancy) from the French (cynophilie, dog amateurism; cynologique, of dog studies, probably popularised by the title of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale). The word is not yet found in major English dictionaries. Both the French and English words derive from the Greek roots; (kyn) for dog and; (logos) for word.

Cynologists (students of cynology) concern themselves with canine evolution, breed development and differentiation, canine behaviour and training, and canine history. The discipline was virtually non-existent prior to the last quarter of the nineteenth century, when purebred canine registries began to be organised, starting in 1873 with the founding of The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom.

It's not one I'd recommend. ;) If you do a search on here, using her name as the keyword, you'll find a lot of opinion.

(It's no great achievement to get dogs sitting in a row - I've done it with 5, not all of them mine - and I'm not a very good trainer! ;))
- By jollyjem Date 28.12.05 14:52 UTC
why didnt you like it jeanie? is it not a very good book? I can get tyson to shit still for 2 minutes if i hold a biscuit above his head, but i would be impressed if i saw someone with 5 dogs sitting you must be a really good dog trainer jeanie

"Think Dog" by John Fisher is worth reading. Also "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.

ROFLMAO :D :D jollyjem

"I can get tyson to shit still for 2 minutes if i hold a biscuit above his head,"

I think if you can get a dog to do that this is much harder than getting a lot of dogs to sit in a row...........

The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey and The Book of the Bitch by Evans & White, are both very informative books  :D Might be a good starting point.
