Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Toilet Training an 11 month old dog

We have just got a beutiful 11 month old male sheltie.  He had been kept by the breeder in a kennel outside prior to us getting him and had not been used to being "in doors".  We of course keep him inside our house and has the free run of the house.  Unfortuantely we still have diffiuculty with him going to the toilet outside.  He doesn't give any warning of when he wants to go to the toilet.  We talk him out first thing in the morning and while he goes, he will later go again in the house without any warning (it is usually a poo!).

We give him lots of praise when he goes outside and we admonish him when he goes inside.  We are surprised at this behaviour as he is appears a be a very intelligent, personalble doggy.

Go to "Visitors questions" then look for the topic saying "accidents in the house" (sorry I can't do links!). I've just wrote something to the poster on there about exactly the same topic.

If he's been a kennel dog then he won't be house trained. You'll have to start this from scratch - treat him as if he was 8 weeks old. Take him (not just let him out) outside at least every hour, after each meal, after playtimes and when he wakes after a nap. When he performs, say the 'command' word of your choice (one that you'll be happy to say in public! - "busy", or "hurry up", or "weewees" or whatever) and then give him plenty of praise. He'll soon associate that word with what he's doing, and then you can start using it before he does it naturally. If you use it too soon it'll just be another sound to him, with no meaning.

And of course, be vigilant in the house! Don't leave him unattended, and watch his behaviour. You'll learn to interpret his actions and recognise when he's feeling the urge - that's when you take him outside. Good luck!

That's pretty much what I wrote on the other thread! :D
