There is no particular breed I could say I really, really dislike but I wouldn't choose to own any of the bull or terrier breeds.

Staffy's or staff X or bully X,jack russells,Gsd's. I like the look of Border collies but so many seems to have mental problems

I like any dog with a squishy face such as boxers, bull mastiff, shihtzu etc.
ok i will answer this seeing as the question has been asked :)
I wouldnt have anything smaller than a large breed dog. I just prefer the large breeds, dont know why as i grew up with a jack russell. :D
I prefer medium/large breeds, but not so large so that they have a considerably shorter lifespan.
I wouldn't own a dog with a short muzzle (not because I don't like the look of them, but because of the breathing troubles they can get) and I don't really like dogs with very long ears or excessive coat.

I'm not overkeen on handbag sized dogs - particularly don't like Pekes but am prepared to accept that this is based on my headmistresses horrible little crittur. Also not fond of hairless or dogs that have "squashed in" faces. I loved my cocker spaniel enormously but wouldn't have another one - why I didn't buy shares in an ear cleaning lotion company I dunno! But then who am I to be prescriptive? I've got a Jack Russell!!! :)

Have to agree, with most breeds I couldn't live with it is the temperamnet that wouldn't suit me (and I am talking correct temperament here not nasty one among them).
As I said I don't like anything needy or servile, or too eager :D
Cocker spaniels. Westies. Yorkies. I have met too many nasty versions of the aformentioned breeds whilst grooming although we have owned all three when I was younger. I wouldnt own anything hairy though as I wouldnt have the patience to groom them when I do it all day.

Shar-Pei's , yuck!

Whispermum!! i take great affence :(
(And please don't think I'm saying "all staffies are nasty"- I'm talking about the correct good staffy temper -it's not the sort of behaviour I personally like. I like dogs that are eager to please and eager to work. Staffies are a bit too boisterous and silly for what I like.)
Then you realy shouldn't comment on a breed you know nothing about (your comments are akin to saying all scousers are theaves....)
Staffys ARE realy eager to please and, yes they can be a bit boisterous but they are extremly inteligent and are only exitable if they think they are doing right by you.
personaly i wouldn't like a dog that sleeps all day and only shows love at dinner time.....

Funny how anyone is allowed to comment on ANY breed OTHER than staffies....... And I DO know what they are like, I go to training with several, not my type of dog, end of story.

I am the only one who thinks this thread unconstructive and pointless? What does it matter what breeds we don't like and pointing out all their perceived faults (and after all by the nature of it their detractors are likely to be ill aquainted with the breeds anyway) can only really lead to offence to their devotees.

Oh - I don't think so - as long as people are being truthful and honest :) It's always best to know the downsides to any breeds - it would be no good if I decided that cocker spaniels looked soooo cute, got one and then decided that I couldn't stand the ear problems :D :D Likewise, people who loved tails wouldn't like my youngest :D
Daisy
Good point Daisy :)
My preference is for large breeds.
But not everyone likes the hair and strings of slob (that always seem to hit you in the face, when you least expect it :D).
Each to their own, I say.

A more positive thread, though, would go along the lines of asking people about the breeds they know and love. When asked about my two breeds I know the best I would always point out their down side but of course I would do it with affection and a deeper understanding than someone who would never contemplate having one anyway. You give a perfect example of someone making an assumption about a breed you have never owned :) I have never yet had any ear problems with my cockers but then I know that one can pick a puppy with a nice wide ear channel and that regular clipping of the under ear (regular grooming being an obvious necessity with the breed anyway) will also ensure a nice healthy ear environment. I don't find your assumption of ear problems offensive as it is rather a common one :) but things have been said in this thread that
are rather more unpleasant and offensive
has been taken, as I say, I think it would have been very much nicer if people had been asked for more information, anecdotes etc of the breeds they know, something I never tire of hearing and cut out the derogratory comments from those who don't know or understand a breed, much nicer don't you think? :)

It's a very old thread too.
I think it's fine if people point out the downsides of their own breed/s; otherwise there's the risk of appearing to slag off other people's favourites which would cause ill-feeling.

The simplest question to answer ever!
A human! they irritate the life out of me most of the time especially when they are whinging men!!!

ive not been on 4 a while just came on 4 a nosey and noticed a few people slaging of staffordshire bull terriers temperments the staff temp is actully one of the best towards people especially children if people did there reserch properly then they would no this. they R very eger to please and r very loveing dogs they r NOT agressive in any way unless owned by idoit (same with ANY dog ) they staff is reconised as the NANNY DOG because of his afection towards children ANY DOG CAN B AGGRESSIVE AT ANY TIME WHEN BROURGHT UP IN THAT ENVIREMENT

I think Staffies are lovely but could never own one myself, just not my cup of tea, I like hairy monsters :d
I could never ever own anything that has saliva drooling from it's mouth which then shakes its head and it's dripping of the walls and hanging from the ceiling. YUCK.

Redstaffy you haven't read the messages properly. NOBODY has been talking about aggressive dogs. It seems to me the staffy owners are the aggressie ones, not the dogs. ;)

Yes, I've never met an aggressive Staffy and there's loads in my park. What I do meet is lots of friendly Staffys that scare my Cavs cos they're so boisterous, and their owners have no control over them - but they're not nasty at all!
By redstaffy
Date 09.10.05 14:04 UTC
so did no one say theyve never meet a good staff and they r always agressive to all other dogs...maybe iam seeing things i know staffs can be a bit mad and dont mind saying they have faults people carnt coment on a staffs behavour or any other breed unless the have actully owned one
By Phoebe

Redsdtaffy - just take it on the chin - I did when several people on here said they didn't like shar-pei... not their fault they're sadly deluded is it. (tongue firmly planted in cheek before anybody flames me!).
I like staffs - I wouldn't have one myself, but just to totally confuse matters, I'd have a American Staff tomorrow if they weren't banned - saw some at a show in the USA and they are fabulous. There is a nasty staff round here owned by a complete retard who lets him off knowing he will attack other dogs. However there are at least another 12 who are sweeties... yes, we ARE staffie central around here and there seem to be more staffs and boxers than anything.

Phoebe, I also have a Staffy mix at home that I rescued from a really wierd environment. And she took the worst of both parents unfortunately, as she is very agressive (even though I took her to training when she was only 4 months old). I spent maximum time socializing her, but nothing helped. We even went to Agility till she started fighting with everybody. It's not a Staffy in her, it's just her individual nature. Unfortunately you find bad examples in every breed. And if you ask me whether I'd have another Staffy....well, perhaps. But not right now.
Oh and about the AmStaff..... they are gorgeous to look at. My friend has a lovely female and goes to dog shows with her a lot. Lovely, massive, muscular and very friendly girl!
All dogs are beautiful, I can't say I really dislike any of them. And if I saw one suffering I'd take him no matter what breed he/she is. But luckily we have so many choices that we can still pick the ones we like a little bit more.....
<Redstaffy you haven't read the messages properly. NOBODY has been talking about aggressive dogs. It seems to me the staffy owners are the aggressie ones, not the dogs>
Now you judge all staffy owners as "the aggressive ones"
Have you ever been acused of being Narrow Minded ???????
Staffy people have to be protective of their breed as bigoted people as yourself seem to judge them without knowing a DAMN THING (just see what is happening in France to see how dangerous this can be...).....
If you bothered to get to know them instead of singling out the one breed then maybe you might just learn somthing.
>Now you judge all staffy owners as "the aggressive ones"
No, I merely remarked upon the curious fact that everyone has been able to tell us what breeds they could never imagine having, in a calm and friendly manner, giving the reasons why -and nobody has got uspet. I's just a discussion of different views. Yet when I say the one breed I would never want is a staffy, simply because it is not my type of dog at all, the staffy owners turns nasty... I didn't see that happen when ANY other breed was mentioned as one people would not like to keep..... If I HAVE to like staffies by some unwritten law, then I'd say you equally HAVE to like Malinois, Goldens, Cavaliers and Papillons. ;)
I dont like any breed that dont breathe propery! Like pugs & bulldogs. Or dogs with popping out eyes.
Also dont like curly tails either i like bums covered!

I would not have an English bull terrier or a staffy. I think most of the problems with big dogs is not the dogs but the owners.
Anything small and yappy, or any breed that suffers due to the way its been badly bred ie, shar pei or bulldog.
How very sad, I am not overly keen on a few breeds but they are all gods creatures and I love them all, I cannot point out and say "I dont like that breed because"....
there is no breed i definately wouldnt have live with me as long as the temprement health is good any would be welcome as i am not against any breed of dog they are all beautiful in their own right......

Dont do Labs! Common as muck and wag at both ends...far to busy and give themselves away freely to anyone that has a treat in their pocket - I like 'em more aloof ;)
Sarah
I dont take offence when people say they dont like my breed, wouldnt do for us all to like the same thing or we would only have 1 breed of dog in the world that would be an unhappy world :-( Its funny to see how other people see your breed.
Up to now mine is a yappy fur ball with his bum on show. (which is spot on) = Yorkie But its what I like in a dog (maybe not the bum on show bit). Hes a little man with a massive amount of self importance.
Ok im gonna be controversial now and say any bull breeds, met lots of em and they have wonderful personalities particularly staffs who are really friendly but I would never have one myself. I don't mind people not liking my breed but when people don't like wheatens or terrier because they are ignorant it really annoys me! :)
Particularly when people so 'I don't like terriers' because they are snappy (biggest load of rubbish! terriers are no more snappy than any other group) and they are mental (well some are but in a good way! :D) I think ignorance dog full stop causes problems
sarah xxxxx
i would never own a staffy or any bulldog breed its not that i dont like them there just not for me
Ann
owner of 2 common as muck labradors ....lolol
If i'm honest the only breeds I couldn't ever imagine myself living with would be Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds.
Now they're both lovely, and I did adore those I met, and the coat on an Italian Greyhound is amazingly wonderful to touch, but I don't think they really suit me. I'm saying this and I live with two dogs i'd of never intentionally lived with if they weren't rescues, but I really do think the Whippet pushes it a bit, I prefer dogs with a bit of substance.
Again I love sighthounds, I do, but Otterhounds are more my cup of tea in the Hound department, even fi I have all but given up on ever having one owing to a neighbours vocal displeasure of the Whippet's rare outbursts of Baskerville howls. I think he'd have a fit if I dared bring an Otterhound home.
I wouldnt own Border Collies or Labradors, sorry to say it but.................................................BORING!!!!!

I must admit that I do not have a fondness for what my husband calls "rats on bits of string" - I'll leave the breed/s to your imagination(s) ;)
Margot

My husband can't bear 'small fluffies'. ;)

I thought loving dogs means just that..... no matter the size, colour or temperament. Thinking that a certain breed doesn't go with your life style is one thing, but not being able to stand a certain breed is something else :( .

I like men - doesn't mean to say that I would want to marry all of them though :D :D :D I'm fussy :D :D Same with dogs - do I like ALL the looks, ALL the temperaments - NO :D :D :D
Daisy

Hear hear, Daisy! I also like chocolate - except plain chocolate, or Dairy Milk. Preferences in anything are normal! :)

Ah but we aren't talking about likeing only we are talking owning and living with. Some of the breeds I wouldn't live with I actually like individuals a lot but they have traits that would take away the pleasure of owning a dog for ME.

As the thread title asks - "which breed WOULDN'T you have?" My husband WOULDN'T have anything small and fluffy.
And no, I certainly couldn't love a dog with a generally savage temperament, and which attacked me all the time!

My husband says our Papillon isn't a dog at all and he will NEVER admit to liking him in public and he will NEVER walk him, but he will "love him to bits under cover", LOL. Guess it's a man thing!!! He's QUITE happy to be seen out walking a Malinois!

Goldmali, the funny thing with my boyfriend is that he's the one that looooves taking our Chihuahua out. He would go to the city center with him, holding him in his arms :) . Tell your husband that he'll never have as many girls walking up to him and start talking! lol...... now when my brother saw how popular and interesting my bf is with that Chi in his lap, he wants to take him out all the time!

LOL at Ory. :D Great stuff.
