Which breed could you never see yourself with - because of circumstances or just because your not that struck.
Mine would be a Peke or a Chihuahua, lovely breeds but not for me.

Anything yappy
Anything I might stand on
Anything really slobbery (Phoebe shook the other day and one lot went over my keyboard and the other splashed in my coffee!

)
Anything that might be mistaken for a Guinea Pig
Anything that needed a lot of grooming (I love the breeds, but I have 4 horses to groom and thats enough!)
Anything smarter than me

Anything small :D
i agree with mel nothing small :)

Anything that resembles a wee hairy handbag instead of a dog :D

Yep, me too, can't stand the small yappy dogs!!!

Got to agree with most peoples reply's, small is just not for me, I find most cute to look at, but prefer something bigger.

Anything tiny, and frail .
Anything yappy.
Anything hairless.
I'm like Mitch, tiny dogs are nice to look at but I would rather have something more substantial.

Can't see myself ever having a poodle or any kind of terrier. Or a pug. Or a griffon.
Any breed that dosent fit in my household - 4 kids, many visitors, a Ridgeback's idea of hell. GSDs and collies would also probably go nuts with the music, running feet etc
Any breed needing specialist grooming or lots of it - cant even do my own hair and filth just sticks to all of us so the dog would be a mess.
Im clumsy so nothing I could sit on, stand on or trip over which excludes most small breeds except tough wee terriers
Himself must be the only bearded one in this house, he says, so no wirehaired dogs ( shame! I like Spinones)

Great idea to do this.mine would be a boston terrier and a pug they're not my type!LOL! Kirsty
anything smaller than leo hes a sheltie but looks like hes going to grow to the size of a small rough collie.
I would love a lab, they are my fave breed but because of circustances (small house and garden) we cant have one at the moment
I know this will upset a lot of people here, but I would never own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The ones I have seen locally are all aggressive with other dogs, can't be let off the lead and are noisy. But again it could be the owners, who are also noisy and aggressive!
Maybe if I met some of the Staffies mentioned on these pages I would change my mind (how's that for diplomacy?)

Nothing so small that it wont enjoy long, strenuous exercise.
Nothing un-naturally large.
Nothing that needs large amounts of grooming.
Nothing that wont easily get on with other dogs.
Nothing where the breed experts say "dont let it off the lead".
Nothing that has been selectively bred for a body structure that makes it unhealthy, or regularly requiring assisted births.
Nothing that doesn't respond to sensible training.
Nothing that thinks it needs to bark all day.
Picky arent I! ;-)

Ok Havok. I'm jumpin' in here! LOL LOL!!! Did you know that in the summer here at Priest Lake Idaho, I go for hikes in the wilderness, one of them is 9 miles up and down hills to get to a very pristine lake called upper Priest Lake and guess who keeps right up with the big dogs? You guesses it. Little 5 lb Chulita and bigger 15 lb Jose. NO PROBLEMO. They're as hardy as the rest of em. We do 3 mile walks every single day throughout the year. The only time we skipped was when Mom was too much of a wuss to go out into the weather that we had for about a week last winter. It was 27 degrees F. below zero. But when it's a balmy 15 degrees F. above zero, we put on their little fleece jackets and off we go through the snow. We get about 3 to 4 feet here in the Selkirk Mountains where I live.
Thought you'd like that. Good things come in small packages. My Chihuahuas are very edearing and willing to please, not hyper, not ankle biters, friendly to everyone and easy to travel with. Great little snugglers and they help keep Doberbrat in line.

Ok...what would I not have? I'm not into a lot of grooming. (had a Himalayan cat once and that was enough to teach me my lesson)
So, no long hair. Also like a clean house and the less hair the better. Bonnie Lab is bad enough.
Especially no hair or ears that gets into food bowl.
No unnecessary yappers unless yapping in warning as my Chi's do and hush when I tell them. (ok, slight exaggeration there, but just slight)
No slobbery, lose fitting lips or excessively wrinkled face or skin. (don't want to be reminded of how I'm aging)
Must be in the top ten for intelligence. (Chihuahuas are the exception)
Must be exeedingly handsome. (Chihuahuas are the exception)
Must be a dog who is bred to work and wants to have a job. (chihuahuas are the exception-Well, actually, they are bred for a job. Companions. That's it. That's their job.)
Must be atheletic.
That's it.

Wouldn't have anything very small - I'd be too frightened about treading on it.
Nothing that has breathing problems, wrinkly skin or hair over it's eyes.
Couldn't have a lab, as I hate people who let their's rush up to people and jump up or nearly knock them over and think that it is funny because labs 'are just SO friendly' :( and I wouldn't want to be hypocritical :D
Dachshunds.
Not being picky really :)

We don't ALL let our labradors annoy other people. A few labradors know better! ;-)
By Daisy
Date 27.04.04 13:41 UTC
Oh I know :D But it does annoy me how people get labradors because 'they are SO friendly' - don't do any training with them and they become very, heavy pests who put muddy pawprints all over your trousers and coat and the owners just laugh :( :(
Sorry - my rant isn't directed at all the responsible lab owners :)
Daisy
By labmad
Date 27.04.04 13:49 UTC

Yes I but other breeds do that apart from labs! I agree though with the principle of your rant! although some people are a bit silly wearing for example a cream pair of trousers and cream top to go to the park etc when it's slightly muddy....asking for it springs to mind! I do agree with what you say though and for the record my lab doesn't do that! he he :-)

I'll agree with you! :)
But then, like you, I've never had the pleasure of meeting a "good" Staffy :( All the ones I know are either left to roam the streets and make a complete nuisance of themselves, or are the ones with huge spiked collars and harnesses - and an idiot on the other end of the lead!!!
Other than that.... toy breeds (although a Tibetan Spaniel MAY have to be excluded ;) ) and slobber dogs like the St Bernard... the drool makes me gip!

I know this is a complete cop-out, but I don't think there's any breed of dog I wouldn't have if I fell in love with it. I could say that I'm not too keen on teeny dogs, but then again I've met some absolute darlings that I'd take home in an instant.

i dont know what theyre call but one of those dogs that have have knoted fur!!! they look like a walking mop
sorry but there so ugly

do you mean a komodor or a puli
By ravens01
Date 27.04.04 08:04 UTC
Oh man...in reality, there are very few dogs I would actually go out and buy. I have a bunch of pretty broad requirements:
No toy dogs....you look at them wrong and they break
No huge dogs...don't live long enough (I love bernese and newfies, but 9 years just isn't enough!) and typically aren't as good at some performance events
No typically hard to train breeds...I like performance too much to be discouraged by trying to train a hound or a terrier (I mean that in the nicest way to hound and terrier people)
No terriers....I think you have to have a certain personality to get along with one
No scent-hounds....once again, harder to train and certain hound traits could be hard to live with
No extraordinarily high energy dogs
Long hair is preferred...they're just so much more exciting to pet and ruffle up
No breeds with very prevalent health problems...example: cocker spaniels with ear and eye problems
As Havoc so eloquently put it "Nothing where the breed experts say 'dont let it off the lead'"...who doesn't love a nice trip to the off-lead dog park
Anyways...amongst others, these are a few of the big ones. I know there are exceptions to every breed, so I hope nobody is getting offended!

My Lab doesn't jump on people either, never has. I don't think she could if she wanted to. My 8 month old Doberman doesn't even jump on people and they're a lot more energetic and wild when they're pups.
And my Chihuahaus do not break when you look at them. They don't bite or growl. They're very sweet natured to everybody. They're not hyper. They're not wimps. They're treated like dogs. They do everything my big dogs do. They're yappers, but only when someone is coming to the house or if they need to chase a bear off the property. LOL. They're my early warning security system. Then the Doberman is the back up just in case they don't do the trick.
And just in case someone doesn't like Dobes, (LOL, LOL) in advance..... my Doberman is not mean spirited, vicious, untrustworthy, crazy, brain being squished and all the rest of the stereotypical and mythical nonsense. He's aloof with strangers for a few minutes while he sizes them up, (breed standard) then he's licking them and wagging his stubby tail full throttle. He's sweet natured and very, very affectionate with me and anyone who is my friend, even if that friend has only been my friend for 15 minutes. It's dependent on how they're bred, socialized, trained and treated.
There, I've tried to undo some of the generalizations with my dogs anyhow.
Oh, and that breed with the funny hair may be a Komodor or Pulli. (sp?) Could that be what you meant Tracey?

Hey to many people moaning about slobber!!!...I just keep kitchen roll in my back pocket when my boxer bitch foams at the mouth (no she hasn't got rabies) and just wipe it away...Thats the fun of having a slobbery dog...

Wouldn't have anything small and wouldn't have a neopolitan mastiff...think they're awful looking...sorry to any owners!!
Archer
Anything but a flatcoat :) Actually that's not strictly true but I wouldn't have a staffie - I'm really sorry to those friendly responsible owners on this site but I have only met one who wasn't aggressive towards other dogs and I just couldn't cope with that (quite happy to cuddle other people's though :) ). Wouldn't have too small a dog or any dog who couldn't take a lot of exercise when mature and not that keen on English bull terriers.
Best wishes

I don't really know,i've grown up with boxers, mastiffs, rotties and own 2 lovely boxers so i could'nt give my opinions on smaller dogs, i've met a few smaller breeds, staffys, pugs, collies etc but until i've actually owned and worked with them, i can't say anything for me not to have a specific breed.
but if i was to choose which dog i'd would'nt have, it would have to be a french shepherd dog called a Berger de Picardie, so ugly, hairy and can't even see their eyes. so sorry to these Picardie owners but what do you see in these dogs?
Has anyone seen or heard of these? or maybe own one?

Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, Border Terriers (only know 2 borders and they are as nasty as hell), Afghan Hounds (too much hair) and English Bull Terriers (just look odd to me)
I prefer to know that I have a dog on the end of a lead and hate noisy dogs that yap at everything in and out of sight.
Don't mean to upset any owner's of the above breeds. Sorry.

For the record....my list would be too long too type as well!!!! plus it would mean that most of the CD folk would never talk to me again!!!
JRT sorry to all owners but I have never met a nice one yet. EBT I dont like them to look at although have met the breed and have been friendly. Not a fan of yorkies either far too yappy for me.
Michelle :)

nothing small, nothing hairy, nothing slobbery

Hmm, thats a difficult one. I have three categories really, one is the dogs that i wouldn't mind owning, the other are dogs i like but wouldn't own and the third i'm afraid i definately wouldn't own, though its no fault of their own. I am not a terrier person, (although i don't mind westies) so i wouldn't own one, couldn't own anything like a pug or a bulldog because the snorting noise would drive me mad. (oh that sounds so shallow). I don't think i would really ever have a toy dog, i prefer bigger dogs. The bigger the better really. Someone round here has a 6 month old Boerboel, and he is absolutely gorgeous, i love dogs with massive paws - i'm in love!

I don't know...a walking mop is not all together a bad idea. I had a Himilayan cat, like a Persian who had the most beautiful fur, all fluffy, but a real pain to keep nice. My Lab was a very calm, laid back pup as far as pups go and the cat too was so relaxed and unperturbed about anything. The Lab would push the cat all around the hardwood floor we had (which was a lot) with her nose and keep it up for quite some time...back and forth, all around. The cat thought it was great. The Lab thought it was great fun and I didn't have to sweep my floor. LOL.

Yeah....true except for their little manes, tails and fetlocks. LOL. But you could do your hair together on Friday nights. You could curl it, spike it, put bows in it...the possibilities are endless. LOL.
Carrie
No offence meant to anyone who owns the following breeds! :-)
Chihuhua (sp?) - been attacked personally by too many and so have my Staffs, can't stand 'em...
Pekes - been bitten by them too many times
Beardies - adore them, but couldn't cope with all that coat
Pretty much any toy breed...don't seem like "real" dogs if you know what I mean.
Anything slobbery, I just don't see the attraction of a drooling dog.
JRTs love them as visitors but couldn't live with one fulltime.
Sorry Lab owners but all the ones around here are overweight barrel shaped nightmares and I get pretty fed up of the " oh their just so friendly" brigade.
I love Staffies but would never own one because I couldn't be bothered with all the people crossing the road to get away from us.
Border Collies because every behaviour problem page I have ever read has been full of problem Border Collies.
Now i've made enemies of half the board i'll run for cover :D
Steve
What's wrong with drooling????......its fantastic for fixing the wall paper back :D
