Want to do business management...

Hiya Rox, I was down at my old uni today as I'm looking at doing a few guest speaking slots for a business course.  Gosh it's changed!  But I went to one of the open days at the beginning of the month just to have a nosy round the new facility.  Basically yes you'll get to see all the facilities and they'll give you tours and give you an overview of your course but as they'll more than likely run all day it can be a good opportunity to grab a few minutes with the people who run the course and ask them any questions you might have and speak to people who are already doing the course and make sure it's the right choice for you.  Going to uni is a great opportunity and don't let it overwhelm you! :)

PS: forgot to say, if the thought of the crowds really do put you off, why not give the uni a phone and ask if you can set up a personal visit for you and your folks?

Thanks.  I think I'm just working myself up...surely it won't be as bad as crufts and I can cope with that!  Would hate to be the only one also!  I like small groups best! :D

I'm going to gain lot's of information and hopefully learn a little more about uni life so I can be prepared!

 dad said he now wants to go to uni and because of cost he'll share my course of I do the work and he does the drinking.... I personally would like it other way round or I will do both!!! :D

Ask them what modules there'll be on the course and then what the content is likely to be.  Do you already know what the career path is?  What will the qualification actually allow you to do next?  These are questions you probably know the answer to already.

Have a really good look around. Ask yourself if you can see yourself spending 3-4 years there. Is it a campus uni or a city one ?? There is a lot of difference between the campus uni where virtually everything is on one site and you can feel that it's all like 'home' and a city uni where you often have to commute in to lectures by bus, bike etc. Some people love city life, others detest it. Liking the place is at least as important IMO as the course - if you aren't happy, you won't enjoy the course :) Also, make sure that you really like the course that you choose. If you are only doing the course as a means to an end, then the chances are that you won't do as well as studying a subject that you love :)

Find out what accomodation the uni can offer you (I assume that you are not living at home ?) What are the chances of getting uni accomodation if you make the uni your first choice ? It's usually better to live in uni accomodation for the first year . Check out the costs - can you afford the sort of accomodation that you want ?

Check out that your (future) qualifications are enough to be accepted by the uni.

Good luck - try to enjoy it :)

The difference between campus life and off-campus is a very important one. Some people on campus get sick to the back teeth with only really meeting other students all the time. With an off-campus university there's a much wider spectrum of people to meet on a social basis.

Of course if students have never lived away from home before then campus life is a good gentle introduction to reality!

Thanks.  On saturday I'm going to look at uni of Bradford.  The school of management is seperated from the rest of the main part but in the diagrams the grounds look lovely...bet they arn't green when I get there!!!!!!!

I'm not into big cities however I've never really lived in one so I might get into a city and love it....you never know!

From what I have on paper and in books Bradford looks REALLY good and it's in my top 2 choice ATM.  I know I might get there, take one look and hate it.  but untill saturday all  the information I have is what's on paper or on the interent!

I have also worked out aslong as I put in the work this year into my A Levels I need to at least get a C and two D's which according to my teachers should be easy enough if I revise and meet deadlines! :D

So right now I WILL do that homework!!! :D

I'm sure that you will really like uni life :) Yes, it is a really big culture shock from living at home, but you will meet so many new people who are all in the same 'boat', that it will very quickly become 'home' :)

Have a good day tomorrow.  I am a very mature student and so going to uni for me was terrifying.  I expected to spend 3 years isolated because of my age but how wrong could I have been.  The one thing I quickly realised when I got to uni was that despite the age difference to the majority of students we all had something in common and that was the interest in the subject we were studying.  My 3 years at undergrad were great and I made some great friends young and also more my own age and we all helped each other.  I refused to be a mother figure (bearing in mind most of the students were my daughter's age) and they didn't treat me like one.

I remember at graduation last year looking at all the young students, many of whom had been teenagers at the start and realising how they had grown, not in height although some had in weight so remember not to eat too many pot noodles/pizza/McD and drink too much lager, anyway they had grown as individual people, they had matured into confident independent adults.  I am feeling all emotional now.

It is a big step but remember that however you feel tomorrow most of those you meet will be having the same thoughts and feelings.

Let us know how you get on

Don't worry!

Ive been to 4 or 5 uni open days and they pretty much all follow the same pattern - you get shown round the campus and in particular your department, they show you the halls of residence and talk through parts of the course as well as all of the extra curricular stuff you can do there. And you get to ask questions, which they try their best to answer!

Its true about the city and campus uni - I went to brunel for all of 3-4 months and i didnt like my course so i ended up leaving - that was a campus uni halls are just across a v small road or in the middle of campus and everything is together so it is actually a great place if you like that - although it was in a small town so there wasnt that much going on and the perception that london wasnt far a way was a bit wrong!

Now im just about to start my 3rd year at Leicester - i actually live in coventry with my boyfriend as the whole brunel experience put me off but Leicester is totally different, the halls are a bus ride away most of them are in a street of old houses owned by the university which have been converted, the actual campus is spread down another road and this year for the first year i think one lot of my lectures are going to be off campus. - However the campus itself has bars and clubs and obviously being a big city has lots of nightlife / shops / easy transport - the only thing that isnt easy is parking! LOL

so obviously i prefer the city life to the everything on one campus uni but it is something to consider, which you prefer etc

But mainly - Enjoy yourself and don't worry!
