Hello I was wondering about sables, I have a option to have a sable-puppy, some people say that sables get pedigree but are not a showing-dogs, I´ve been looking for information about sables on the internet and some countrys allow sables in the showring, The question is how is it in your contrys?

Im sorry about my english, but english is not my spoken languesh.

Hi Nepal,  whilst Sables are not permitted to be shown in the breeds  home country, the USA, they are allowed to be shown here, in the UK   However, we only have a very small Sable Gene pool over here, and Sable and whites, rather than solid sables, have more quality and therefore much more success in the showring in the UK.  We have had 1 Sable &White Champion made up in the breed, an imported dog., in the last 10 years.  There have been some succesful Sables in Canada,  but I am afraid I do not have  any knowledge of them any where else in the world, or even if they are allowed to show under FCI rules.  I think the most important thing to consider, after you discover if Sables are permitted where you will be showing, is if the dog is actually an excellent specimen of an American Cocker, regardless of colour.  So many people get fixated on the colour of their preference, especially if a rare colour, that they concentrate fully on colour or markings, and ignore the basic essentials - however goo the colour is, you need to look at the dog underneath it first.  You will then have to bear in mind that being an unusual colour, you may have to suffer not being considered by some judges, or being judged less favourably especially if you have American judges visiting.  Hope this helps a little

But what a gorgeous colour - I saw a sable and white once at an open show with my buff boy, and fell in love instantly! Unfortunately my OH only ever wants a buff - ah well! :-)

Thank you for the answer gwen.
In my country are 8 sables and 1 sable/white. Sable/white has been shown 2 times, and first time was a judge from uk and he gat 1 "grade" (red border) and second time was a judge from denmark and then he was disqualified because of color.
They have always get clean pedigree from FCI regognise organasation but now they want to put "X" for color, wich I dont understand, why cant it just be like before, Isnt just time to get the standart reconstructed and put the word "sable" in?

here are 2 webpages with information about sables

Hi, perhaps the problem is the FCI are wanting to relate to the home countries breed standard, which is the USA, where, of course,  it is a disqualifying colour.  There have been MANY very long discussions and arguments about permitting the colour in America, wiht the Sable fans putting very persuasive cases, but the Spaniel Club remains firm in not allowing it.  From my own point of view, I don't see that the colour will gain enough quality (by which I mean dogs in that colour, not the coats themselves) without being permitted in the USA, where the laregest gene pool of the breed is available.  In the UK I cannot remember seeing a single dog in solid sable who comes near to the breed standard in most important respects.  However, I have seen some very attractive and quite correct sable and whites.  Perhaps it is the case that lovers of the colour have to resign themselves to just admiring their own dogs, and forget about showing?
