Hi all,

I was chatting to someone the other day who mentioned in passing that the KC are going to split the registrations for the Akita soon. Does anyone know what this is about? I vaguely remember hearing something about it but it's gone!
I just want the facts.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

As I remember it was something to do with the Japanese "type" being quite different in size and substance (plus a few different colours too  )  from those most commonly seen both in the US and in the UK.  Can't honestly remember what they settled on for names - think it was "Japanese Inu" for those most like the standard of the country of origin and there was mention of "Great Japanese Dog" but this was overturned for "Akita" for the numerically stronger and more commonly shown (in US & UK).

But you wanted facts ..... and that's just my recollection  so perhaps some Akita folks will be along soon ........ Teri :P

It will be Japanese Akita Inu: Further info. here . The FCI classification is for (I think) Akita Inu and Great Japanese Dog (a nonsense name, reached, I believe as a compromise). GJD is what we (UK & US) would generally call the Akita.

I have been told that the split will come into being on January 1st 2006.
