Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Older dog has started peeing indoors

My 3 year old isbt has started peeing indoors on a regular basis. She has never really totaly be 100% house trained and always been prone to the odd wee mistake...however its getting to the point i cant go out for 10 mins and she will pee somewhere.I praise her when she goes outside, and she knows full well what she has done when i get home, as she hides in her bed and is silent when i open the door, which is exactly the opposite from her normal mad self. I really am loosing patience...Any help much appreciated

Hi Rogue,

Have you had her vet checked for a possible urinary tract infection?  She may be unable to stop herself peeing and as well as a UTI there are a few medical conditions which can cause this so as it's a fairly recent occurrence that would be my personal first port of call :)

Unless she wee'd immediately as you entered the room, she has no idea what she's done so that behaviour is because she expects a negative reaction from you - anything from you showing annoyance or indifference towards her or if you have verbally or physically reprimanded her - it's a very common mistake for dog owners to presume that a dog knows when it has done something wrong by reading their body language as guilt - when it's actually a "keeping out of harms way" response.

Have her checked over and please let us know how she gets on.  Good luck, Teri :)

Is she spayed? Some spayed bitches do get incontinent and there is medication for this.

This would take the form of urine dribbling out wherever she was lying though, rather than going to a particular place and squatting.  Are you finding damp bedding or a patch of damp where she often lies?

She just does it when i go out, if Im in the house she`s fine, which makes me think its not medical but that could be possible, and wouldnt do any harm to get checked. She has also started following me about all time I mean like wont let me out of her sight and whines and cryes if I leave the room she`s in......

If she hasn't been spayed get her to the vets, especially with the whining etc. I'd be a little bit worried.  Has she had a season recently?

Never hurts to get these things checked out.

Have any changes occurred in her life recently, that might have unsettled her?
