Using treats or toys in training for conformation/obedience all depends on the individual dog & how much work drive it has. Most dogs will work for bot toys & treats but their are some that will only work for one or the other & some(a very small minority)need just praise or nothing at all.
Free standing is the most difficult way of showing any dog & baiting is a way of rewarding the dog for it's work in breed
If you know your dog you should know what will work eventually & some of those top ticket dogs started with titbit, or clicker/titbit, titbit/toy or toy training, all yu see in the ring at the top are the results
Even experienced handlers may have to use different things to motivate their dogs to get the result they want
As I train off lead from day one I use titbits(as part of the diet)& toys to get the puppies attention. It is a lot harder than the compulsion lead method but I know that my dogs work with me because they want to & not because they have to be with me because a lead attaches them to me
All of course is JMHO & learnt from 40+ year of training dogs for obedience & breed(& WT & sheep come to think of it)
