Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Should i use treats?
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 22.06.05 09:25 UTC
hi im starting my pup Paris at Ring Craft classes tonight its her first time she's 13 weeks. The guy at the Craft Training said that i wont need treats as these should be used for obedients not show lessons i thought i was suppose to use treats now im confused can anyone help?

I do more of the oposite if a dog wants to do obediance then it should work for the pleasure of it, like hettie does not being a clown guided by a bit of a treat the whole time, i only give her a a small treat when an exercise has finnished, yes i do use them but not as much! do you see top obediance dogs on telly with treats waggled infront of there noses the whole time?!
For showing i use more treats it helps the puppy in my opinion to think that this is fun and get rewarded for good behavior, it also keeps the dog intrested on you, you can use treats there is now law saying no treats alowed for show dogs lol.

I have to agree with Fiona :)

I mean, how hard is it to stand, and walk right - its not exactly difficult is it? the hardest bit for a pup is learning to stand STILL, and the pup will not find it exciting, rather it's likely to be boring so treats add that extra bit of interest :D  Obedience and agility however, are really self rewarding, dog does as required and is rewarded with ACTION :D - surely the most exciting reward possible :D :D

Exactly the point i was getting at :) :) glad someone agrees lol

Using treats or toys in training for conformation/obedience all depends on the individual dog & how much work drive it has. Most dogs will work for bot toys & treats but their are some that will only work for one or the other & some(a very small minority)need just praise or nothing at all.

Free standing is the most difficult way of showing any dog & baiting is a way of rewarding the dog for it's work in breed

If you know your dog you should know what will work eventually & some of those top ticket dogs started with titbit, or clicker/titbit, titbit/toy or toy training, all yu see in the ring at the top are the results

Even experienced handlers may have to use different things to motivate their dogs to get the result they want

As I train off lead from day one I use titbits(as part of the diet)& toys to get the puppies attention. It is a lot harder than the compulsion lead method but I know that my dogs work with me because they want to & not because they have to be with me because a lead attaches them to me

All of course is JMHO & learnt from 40+ year of training dogs for obedience & breed(& WT & sheep come to think of it)

I do total opposite.  I use treat in show but not in higher obedience (when i did it)

In show you can take treats in the ring, in obedience you can't.  therefore obedience dogs are weaned off treats when at a higher level.

I use lots of treats in ringcraft for puppies.  Ringcraft praise isn't normally as "hyped" as obedience praise IME!

Good luck with training!

We never bait our beagle who is a stacked breed.  She doesnt need it and there are enough things to do with your hands when stacking.

With our dallies unfortunately we did use bait and I curse the day we did.  It tends to get them over excited.  My next puppy will be trained to stand with something else.

I use hyped praise with Idõ when doing RC training, but I also use treats :D In the ring I just treats and physical praise, as obviously the high pitched sqealy praise and leaping about like a fool are not appropriate!!!

Use what you feel comfortably using, some people don't treat, others just use their voice and I've seen alot of people with toy breeds using sqeakers or small soft toys.

Best of luck, its such fun training pups :)
