Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / olde tyme bulldogs advice please

I am thinking of purchasing an olde tyme bulldog but i have a few reservations. Obviously i would be expecting to get a larger dog with fewer health problems but so dar all i have heard is stories of people paying almost as much as they would for a KC bulldog and having a lot of the same problems.
what I would like to know is, what other breeds are used in olde tyme bulldogs apart from the KC bulldog? some of the breeders I have asked have been very vague, in fact almost secretive, just what is in olde tyme bulldogs that makes them so much healthier than Kc bulldogs or is this just a gimmick?
It seems like a lot of breeders are using the "healthy" tag to rip people off and breed dogs that havent been health tested

You are likely to get trhe same prblems in these crosses/emerging breeds as those found in the breeds that went into the mix.  Also it is worth bearing in mind that the best of foundation stock from the original breeds may not have been used by some of the people (as in all breeds).  I certainly would not want to buy a pup from any of these breeds wwhere the foundation and parent stcok were not heatlh tested.  Should be Hip Scored, probably eye tested (most have staffie blood, and staffs have to be eye tested), Heart tesing would be wise as Boxwers for example have widespread heart problems being addressed and reduced by responsible breeders.

If the breeders are being vague and secretive about what the ancest4ry of the dogs is then steer well clear.  In any pedigree of a breed in formation where purebred dogs have been used I would expect the breeds to be listed against the names.  How else can they or new owners really plan the breeding if they don't know what went into the mix.

I know nothing about the Kennel Club unrecognised breed but remember this post very well!

Val,

That dog is an Alyestone BullDOGUE and should not be confused with the Olde Tyme Bulldog.  Two seperate Breeds the Aylestone being either an American Bulldog in appearance, or Dogue Be Bordeaux in appearance.  As these are the breeds that are used to create the Aylestone.  Read my post at the bottom of that thread, then read this one http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/69360.html

The Olde Tyme Bulldog was created by using the healthiest Bulldogs out of some of the best lines out there (I know of an Olde Tyme Bulldog whose grandfather is Living Legend and that dog has been hip scored and heart and eye tested, which is more than what some reputable Bulldog people do, as theres no known health test for the Bulldog but I belive they have just started to heart test dogs that are being bred from, which is pretty discusting as they should be hip scored and eye tested too, IMO) no breeder as yet have confirmed what other breeds have been used to create these dogs, but I have a suspicion it was mainly Bullmastiff.

These dogs are only a fraction of the cost of an English, top price I would expect is around £700 I would not pay any more than that :)

Oh and Val if you wish to pm me I will give you a link on where you can read more about the dog with wobblers, as his owners happen to post an on another board, there you will see an admition from the breeder, and read more about the kind of breeding the dog actually come from, and hopefully you will see and read more on why I do not consider these dogs to be Olde Tyme Bulldogs :)

I would find that interesting as having attended a lecture on wobblers it seemed to ahve been mostly confined to Dobes and Danes.

The dog mentioned in the thread was from a Dogue x AB breeding, I think the breeders of Aylestones bulldogues also use Irish Staff in their lines.

I think I have some pics somewhere of the dog mentioned within then thread Val gave reference to, will see if I can sort them out.
