Does anyone have any experience of this procedure?

Was it successful, etc?

Thanks

Nicky

Hi, I have never had a dog who required the procedure but I have assisted this op on many occasions.
Lateral ear canal resection is a surgical procedure performed on the ear to increase drainage and improve ventilation of the ear canal. It also can facilitate the placement of topical agents into the horizontal canal.  In my own experience, patients did very well post-op, but medical management of the ear was continued in most cases with much improved results.

The outcome really depends on the reason the procedure is being performed, and is mainly indicated for cases of minimal hyperplasia of the ear canal, or cases of small neoplastic lesions on the inside of the ear. However, the procedure in cases of chronic otits externa have proved not to be as satisfactory.
hope this helps,
Carol :)

My first Rescue Beardie had this operation performed, not long after I got her.

The ear infection had obviously not been treated properly in her first home, as she had such a bad ear, chronically inflamed etc. She was 2 when she had the operation and was absolutely fine afterwards. I just made sure I kept the ears clean, and free from too much hair (obviously left some hair in). She was never bothered with ear inflamation/infections again.

When we first got her, before the op, she was in so much pain, she would bang her head against walls/doors, and scratch her ear so much, it was awful to see. I was glad she had the operation.
