Hi, I have never had a dog who required the procedure but I have assisted this op on many occasions.
Lateral ear canal resection is a surgical procedure performed on the ear to increase drainage and improve ventilation of the ear canal. It also can facilitate the placement of topical agents into the horizontal canal. In my own experience, patients did very well post-op, but medical management of the ear was continued in most cases with much improved results.
The outcome really depends on the reason the procedure is being performed, and is mainly indicated for cases of minimal hyperplasia of the ear canal, or cases of small neoplastic lesions on the inside of the ear. However, the procedure in cases of chronic otits externa have proved not to be as satisfactory.
hope this helps,
Carol :)
