I am really thinking about breeding my dog I was wondering if I am alone on this, she isnt KC registered so I most likely wouldnt be able to have a Stud that is registered but I would very much like for her to have puppies.

Wondering is there anyone on here whos dog has had puppies and they havent been KC registered and they have done it for experience, wanting to make more of your dog as you love your dog, etc.

I am not in it for the money but more the experience being a part of that with my dog, she is so lovely and wish there was more of her, she is gorgoues :)
Any comments are very much welcome, I am only a vistor as my computer will not let me log in or something, something to do with cookies I think.

Please, advice, and help, I am still thinking about it and still researching but looking for opinions, experience and so on.

Contact details are nblissett90@Hotmail.com, but would love response on here as some mail may go to my junk mail and I wont see it because people arent on my contact details.

Thanks all,
Cassy x

Hi Cassy, re. breeding you'll be horrified at how many things go wrong :(   Many experienced breeders lose much loved bitches during birth and entire litters can die.  Putting aside the MANY reasons for NOT breeding from unreg & non-health tested dogs, there are far LESS pros than cons to mating.  Unless a breeder with top quality stock in their breed is producing a litter to retain an established line, I can't think of a single pro-breeding scenario   This isn't snobbery because your bitch isn't reg. but I bred myself for the reasons above and was shocked by the amount of stress involved and upset to family life during the weeks before and 8-10 weeks after the litter was born - and this was a straightforward, healthy whelping with most pups pre-booked!  Every pup is so precious and finding "forever homes" is a minefield.  It's a hugely traumatic and VERY expensive event - take it from me! Not only that but I'm now responsible for every one of them for the rest of their lives!  Should they need rehomed for any reason in future I'm obligated to take them back, be they 6 months, 6 years or 12 years old! I'm sure you genuinely love your girl and being honest, THAT is the best reason there is for NOT breeding from her.  Teri :)

I don't think I could ever breed, because I would be really worried about the homes mu puppies would go to. I know the breeder I got my Belgian from feels very upset when her pups go to new homes, and I would be just the same. I would be in a state of constant stress and worry I am afraid - but maybe that's just me!

I can see why you would want to do this but please think what could go wrong :-(

A lady posted on here yesterday whos bitch had just died having a litter - its not as uncommon as you think!

She could get pregnant, abort & get a life threatining infection.

As happened with mine last week she was very distressed in whelp & we had to rush her to the vets who did a section, pups were ok but mum had a bad reaction to the op & was very poorly & allmost died.

Pups can die, or have to be put to sleep.

Mum can get serious infections after the birth too - like eclampsia & mastitis.

The pups could have health defects as the parents are not health tested, which would be very unplessant for the little things :-(

Hope you can see how it is not that great!  My vets bill came to allmost £1000 & I was lucky not to lose the mum & pups,  then there is the worming costs, jabs, flea treatment, welping box, vet bed, poo all over the place!, chewed furnature, puppy food etc.

I've never bred from an unregistered bitch, but I have bred a few litters, so have a bit of input! First of all, only about 10% of pedigree dogs are of suitable quality to breed from - the mere fact of having testicles/ovaries and a uterus isn't enough! ;) All breeding stock (both dog and bitch) needs to be tested against the various hereditary conditions - puppy buyers are becoming very litigious nowadays and court cases for selling a pup with an avoidable problem can be very expensive. It costs at least £1000 to produce a litter properly, and that will have to be spent before the pups are sold. That also doesn't include taking time off work for the time the pups are with you.

Of course, that's when things go according to plan. Bitches still die having litters for many reasons - sometimes the pups die too. The breeder's responsibility doesn't stop when the pups are sold - it's a lifelong commitment - you need to be prepared to take them back at any age, even years down the line. Also remember pups don't always sell quickly - I knew a woman who was tearing her hair out at having seven pedigree dobermann dog puppies still unsold at 14 weeks, and becoming less desirable (in the eyes of buyers who want a baby pup) by the day ... Having a litter isn't necessarily a pleasant experience!

A few thoughts to consider!

I have never and would never breed from an unregistered dog. I have bred from a registered dog, and although I was lucky and everything went smoothly each time, the stress of knowing and watching for what can go wrong is unbelievable. Putting aside the monetary cost, there is a huge cost to your own stress levels, your family and social life and, at times your sanity. After about 3 weeks when you start to think you have past all the worry, you then start to have huge worries over the homes you have found for your babies, and the fact that you want these to be homes for the whole life of the dog. And it doesnt stop when you wave goodbye...

wanting to make more of your dog as you love your dog, etc.

Do you mean trying to replicate your dog ? That could only happen if you cloned your dog & even then there is guarantee that the puppies will be even remotely like your bitch in temperament & character. Breeding from her would just produce puppies that have only half her genes & at the same time put her life at risk

I've only ever owned one dog that had no pedigree & she was a cross & even if she hadn't have been a X but a pedigree I would never had even thouht about breeding from her as there is no way of checking the health of her ancestors re hip & eye status etc
