I've never bred from an unregistered bitch, but I have bred a few litters, so have a bit of input! First of all, only about 10% of pedigree dogs are of suitable quality to breed from - the mere fact of having testicles/ovaries and a uterus isn't enough! ;) All breeding stock (both dog and bitch) needs to be tested against the various hereditary conditions - puppy buyers are becoming very litigious nowadays and court cases for selling a pup with an avoidable problem can be very expensive. It costs at least £1000 to produce a litter
properly, and that will have to be spent
before the pups are sold. That also doesn't include taking time off work for the time the pups are with you.
Of course, that's when things go according to plan. Bitches still die having litters for many reasons - sometimes the pups die too. The breeder's responsibility doesn't stop when the pups are sold - it's a lifelong commitment - you need to be prepared to take them back at any age, even years down the line. Also remember pups don't always sell quickly - I knew a woman who was tearing her hair out at having seven pedigree dobermann dog puppies still unsold at 14 weeks, and becoming less desirable (in the eyes of buyers who want a baby pup) by the day ... Having a litter isn't necessarily a
pleasant experience!
A few thoughts to consider!
