One of my girls is called Askit, why? because my son's picked the name, they wanted to know when people asked whats your dogs name and they say Askit how many are silly enough to ask the dog.my husband thinks its because she gives you a sore head with her barking.(askit powders)

I'm not really sure how our two girls ended up with their names or our previous girl.

However I remember when I was young naming the pup we kept from one of the litters Derry, because at the time I was a great fan of EMF.

Does anyone remember EMF?

I know my childhood dog who my elder sister had before we took in was named after a welsh village.

My Labs have all the colour connections with their names :)

Min the eldest is Minstrel.

Moose is Emma Belle of Hartingcombe. Emma Belle is not a name that in anyway suits her :) She is a thug and we thought of  'chocolate mousse' and so this turned into Moose :)

Lastly there is MB who is known as Dudley now :)

She was the replacement of my first ever dog called Mars Bar who we lost in August 2002. She was always called Mars .

I decided that there would be a Mars Bar 2 so we decided that she wouldn't be another Mars so decided on MB for short. We then found out she had very bad HD. My husband then decided that she was a reject and we were sold a Dud ;)

So hence the name Dudley dog :D

She is definately a Dudley dog as she is such a character ! :D

Murfee (Briard) is named so because an irish friend of mine said that IHO, he was the colour of a potato when he was young and also the old adage of being the bluntest tool in the box, which alas turned out to be accurate (my friend, Finbars idea) so we called him Murfee and his nickname was "spud" :P Albeit this has absolutely no connection with his French origins!

Ella,(GSD) again another friend of mine, who is greek, told me that Ella is greek for "come here" added to the fact that she is very pretty so we call her "bella(beautiful in italian) Ella" :)

Callia,(Briard) because she is French and this means beautiful in French (thank you spook) and she is just sooo beautiful it breaks my heart :) :)

Dylan (choc shar pei) so named as Bob Dylan was on the stereo when we brought him home (renamed from Archie) and he just looks so chilled out (unless there are postmen about  )

Trinity (GSD x) took a week to get her name, but chosen because a) she was born in the season of Trinity, b) she has a three pointed star on her tummy, c) she was my third dog, d) makes up the threesome of me, Dylan and her - a very happy if sometimes mad family!!!

Some of my dog's names just seem to come to me and i don't know what they mean. My male BSD Freebie was not free <g> but the name was short for Freebooter of Belamba. My bitch Tasha was so called because i just felt it had almost come with her, it so suited her. My current girl is Banya and again that just came to me after much thought - but, later my OH found a book called "The Banya" and apparently it refers to a bathhouse in Russia which is also a place of free speech !!! :D I had no idea, but we still just think of it as a name that suits her and try not to think of a Russian bath house too often!

Other family dogs either came with names, or were given names bu us - my sis called her lovely rough haired JRT "JR" after the character in Dallas, as well as it being initials of the breed.

Ella is named for Ella Fitzgerald!  OH originally wanted a dog who would have been called Ellington (poor thing)!  Next dog will be a girl possibly called Dizzy (Gillespie) if it suits her although I like Berrie (blackberry).  I went along with the jazz theme because I like 'Ella' anyway :)

Staffy called Kizzi. Dont know why just liked it.
Shitzu cross jr called Butch so he would feel more macho as small and fluffy.
2 rabbits called Jack and Vera need I say more.
Cat called Wizza was already called this when I got her.
Did have a cat called Tia who was Wizzas baby but sadly she got killed by a car on Thursday. She was only 2.
Tortoise called Leonardo as the kids had never seen a tortoise before and thought he was a turtle so called him after one of the mutant hero turtles.
Stray cat called Whitey because hes white.

Ok I have to say that personally i dont like human names for dogs, so we called our firs Hook as he came from Hook Norton, the second is Truffle, because she spent her time with her nose burried in the saw dust as if she was looking for truffles (and its not TOO chocolaty not keen on all the chockie labs that are called bounty, mars, snicker etc).

Cats are: Sam, Cindy and Gina, who all came with their names and Finigan - named because he was born on st patricks day and looks like a pint of the black stuff and spice, because she has so many different colour browns and reads on her coat that she just looks really spicy.

Most of my b-in-laws animals are named after alchoholic drinks.

Thomas after his dad who is my favourite dalmatian of ever.  Molly because I realised calling a dalmatian Tigger sound a bit stupid at dalmatian of the year when they called the dogs pet name out.  Tigger because she is bouncy and fun and Purdy after the dog in 101 dalmatians.  Quite boring really.

Tess because i had a list of names and mum liked Tess the most, Jack i dont know why, mum took him home when i was at work and let me know later on in the day that 'Jack would like a blue collar' :D but he is quite often called Jack Spratt, or spratt for short, and as he is only little it suits him well, and Bruce i cant remember how or why he ended up being called Bruce, i wanted to call him Bear as he looked like a bear, but mum said it would confuse him  but i like bruce, the name Bruce is from a Norman surname meaning "of Brieuse" in French. Brieuse was a place in France. The name was borne by Robert the Bruce, a Scottish hero of the 14th century who achieved independence from England and became the king of Scotland, so Bruce is 'My Scottish Hero' :D

- By dogcalleddiesel [gb] Date 13.03.05 14:04 UTC
hi im new on here and the proud owner of 20 week old staffie pup called Diesel, who was going to be called red as he is red/ginger in colour with 2 inch thick strip of darker red down his back,i thought red sounded a bit strange to shout out in the street/park so come up with red diesel which was then shortened to Diesel,
Also he is muscly, gorgeous and irrisistable just like Vin Diesel the actor!
Also never heard of another dog called this before.

My Cocker Spaniel is called Dicksy after Julian Dicks ex West Ham footballer! I chose the dog hubby chose the name!  Sadly we lost our Nelly on the 1st March this year and she was Little Nell (Dickens Character) although she was already named when we got her but we had a good history of her first four years of life until she joined us.  I've been to visit my son this afternoon and we were having a laugh and I was telling him that if I got another dog, I'm calling him/her Lincoln so I can remember the time he spent there!  As some of you know sadly he is on remand in prison, whilst visiting today I got talking to the Dog Handler and he was telling me about the two dogs he uses for searches and how the passive one is different from the other one (can't remember now) two totally different type of searches and one of these dogs (the bitch) was only 14 months old!  So clever, he really does take his job home as he keeps the dogs 24/7 continual training, socialisation etc., seemed very interesting.

Holly & Parsley - Blue Roan Cocker Spaniels.

Parsley, I got the name off a tea towel showing - Parsley Sage Rosemary & Tyme, also she had a curly head, like the lion in the childrens tv show (can't remember the name of it ??)  Her posh name was Beautiful Blue Lady (just cos she was).  Also being from Scarborough, it linked with the song Scarborough Fair.

Didn't fancy Sage, Rosemary or Thyme, wanted something from the Country, thought about Bracken but sounded too male, liked Bramble but my friends Springer was called that, so we ended up with Holly - her posh name was Beautiful Blue Princess - the link being the Holly Bush (Ilex Blue Princess)

They ended up being called Nippy (as in Parsnips which an Italian friend thought she was called) & Gitty.

They have both gone to Rainbow Bridge now, So Nippy and Gitty see you there xxxx
