I'm at home with the flu and my pug Ollie who is 12, we got him when he was 8 after his previous elderly owner died and he was left alone in the world :( , and just realized that I don't know how he got his name!??
I would love to know what everyone has called their dogs, and why they have given them the name they have!!

We called our Staffies Ronnie after the two Ronnies and Rosie after my Grandmother....
:)
I hope that your feeling better soon :D

Our first dog was called Pepper who was an all black collie/lab cross, so it seemed apt to name our new dog Spice. We have laughed about the possible names for another dog should we get one and so far have come up with Saffron and Herby.

First labrador in the family (that I can remember) was named after my father's wartime squadron-leader's dog - his name was (gulp) Nigger. And yes, he was black.
Later on, when we got married we had a grandson of his, when we first saw him, he looked like a little lion cub, so he was called Simba. Simba's nephew joined the family later on, and, as another black lab, was called Jet (he was a big boy, so soon was known as Jumbo Jet!). Jet was joined by a Border Terrior (aka the Border Terrorist) called Tramp - because he looked like a miniature Tramp from Lady & the Tramp ;0
Since then, we've been proud to own the lovely Gemma (female version of Jet, according to my son), and then Purdey (after the Avengers, not the gun :D), Australian shepherd Thor was named after the God of Thunder because of his zigzag white flash (had he been born in 1999 or thereabouts, could have been called Harry Potter). We carried on the Norse god names when we acquired Loki - well named for the goddess of mischief. Beau & Vinnie were named, as was the whole of Loki's litter, for late 50s/early 60s pop music, & so are Puttin on da Style and Venus in Blue Jeans! And, last year, when we got Freya, we went back to our Norse gods names.

I remember when my parents used to breed they named a whole litter after characters from Dallas!! Shows how long ago I'm talking doesn't it?!?!

Wow - Lokis mum - didn't Guy Gibson have a black lab called Nigger?

Yep - that was in the pre-PC days, when 'nigger brown' was an official accepted colour.

I was just imagining Margot's dad as one of the dambusters! :) History was never my strong point, but I seem to remember Guy Gibson was the squadron leader and had a black lab called Nigger. :)

No, my dad wasn't a dambuster, he was ground crew!!! But yes, that was the guy!

I called my first cocker, Scampi because when he arrived I was expecting my son & I had a craving for scampi & chips.

Charlie because my daughter chose it - goodness knows why!
Teal because we wanted a gundog with a more appropriate name than Charlie!
Bruce's name evolved. As Teal's pup he was named as he was being born because his 'mask' made him look like Batman. We didn't intend keeping him but ended up (for several reasons) doing so when someone pointed out that he didn't have a full cowl and so should be called Robin NOT Batman. I flatly refused to keep a pup called Batman (despite the boys loving it) and so it evolved into Bruce (Wayne) aka Batman! Of course he now gets called Brewster (as in Millions), Forsyth, Banner, Willis and any other name associated with Bruce's of the world. Come to think of it, I haven't heard anyone call him Batman in ages!
We got Jazz as a rescue dog and had to change his name it just did not suit him he was called Astro. OH picked Jazz after the DJ/singer Maxijazz.

Bramble was called Anakin Skywalker at Battersea - so we changed his name :) - Bramble after a horse that my daughter used to ride. Tara's is her registered name, as we couldn't all agree on a name - Tara was short and easy :)
Daisy

Willow - cant remember exactly why just thought it was different and suited her at the time(Blue Merle)
Satin- Because of the shine on her lovely black saddle (Tri Colour)
Cyan- Shes Blue and white so was trying to think of a less obvious name for blue I already knew a Skye an Indi and a Denim and it was while I was sitting at the computer the name came to me.
Wish - because thats what she was when she was born what I'd wished for a classically marked black and white bitch(My first black and white)
Fizz - Well abit tenuous but its because her registered name is Maestrale Girl (with affixes added of course) Maestrale is a wind but I could hardly call her winding or burp so she got Fizz LOL
Demi I didnt name she was rehomed by us and Bria was Lassie (YUK) a tri colour rough collie bitch called Lassie erm no.

These are all such great original names!! You all have put so much thought into them! I really wish I knew how Ollie got his name!!!
One of the funniest names I have encountered seeing practice, was a kitten who came in for her first vaccinations a few months ago.......the family already had a Cavalier King Charles called Beauty........and yes, they called the tiny kitten 'THE BEAST'!!!!.......when she came back for her booster 2 weeks later they had had second thoughts....and ended up calling her 'Bee' (apt as she was a stripey tabby!).....

It is actually quite funny how we named our boy "orry" we were driving home from seeing the pups in his litter when he was 3 weeks old, and we were driving home and we went past a sign saying "king Orry's grave" (an old manx name) and my mum said, :O that will be a good name, and we never turned back since :D

Ours are Cadmus and Spike. Cadmus because we were just back from a holiday in Greece when we got him, so looked up the index of a book of Greek Mythology. OH picked it and I wasn't so sure, but it grew on me and now can't imagine him being anything but a Cadmus! Spike is Spike because his breeder gave the pups in the litter pet names from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Spike being the only "blonde" in the litter. We liked it so we kept it :)
Lesley
My two black working labs are Isla, no reason, just liked the name!, and Kester, my son who was 4 at the time decided that he was to be Kester even before we picked him from the kennel, and it stuck!. Never heard of another Kester though (another Kester.....scary thought!!)
My new working cocker pup will be called Tizz or Tizzy when I get her (probably!). Only because all the working cockers I've seen look like they're in a right old tizzy when they're excited!
Ali :)
we named amber because she is a red fawn bull mastiff and when we got her she was a lovely ambery colour, a year down the line we adopted a neglected bull mastiff called simba, i wasnt keen on the name and simba sounded too much like amber anyway, we decided on a gemstone theme (amber) i wanted ruby, but i lost the toss and she got jade, which she suits, although she isnt green ;)
By sweep
Date 17.02.05 18:48 UTC
Sweep got his name because when he was 4/5weeks old he had Puppy strangles which was so bad on his face that his face looked long and fat........in short it reminded me of Sweep from Sooty & Sweep.
Phoebe from charector in Friends
Bliss as she was hand reared and her Mother, Kalli, who died giving birth to her was Bliss to own! Bliss I might add is anything BUT!!!
Ava after Ava Gardener(why?)

My first Munster was called Addison. His KC name was Houndbrae Moonlighting & at the time Moonlighting was on TV with Bruce Willis & Cybill Shepherd, Bruce's character was 'David Addison'
My 2nd Munster is called Asti as I wanted a name beginning with A to go alongside Addison, she is almost 14 now.
Miranda is Asti's daughter and her name is also part of her KC name, all the pups were named after Shakespearean characters and she is Miranda (From The Tempest). Mia is a shortened form of Hermia (Again Shakespearean & part of her KC name - Hermia (Midsummers Night's Dream)) and Curtis is again part of his KC name, Shakespearean (Taming of the Shrew).
Christine
my dogs are staffies they are called abbie she came with her name we got her when she was 20 weeks, sox because she has white feet and harley D after the motorbike because he is a stunning huge pup
My TT is called Murphy, basically because he looked like a scruffy murphy, he was originally called Cabi when he had been homed in Scotland.

Hi
My Basset Hound is called Despina from the Greek Myths in which she was the daughter of Poseidon and Demeter, who was Goddess of the Earth. My Yorkie, who is a year older than the Basset, is called Demeter. Despina is also a character in a Mozart opera, where she is a bit of a stirrer - quite appropriate for a Basset, as they know just how to cause mischief. Our previous Basset, who sadly died of kidney failure last year aged only 2, was named Dexter. This was from the Latin, which means right (as in right handed - dexterous), and was a play on words because we felt that he was the "right" dog for us.
Carol ( Sussex )
Grange - because it was noble sounding
Kai - because its short and to the point and short for kaiser which my hubby liked and I didn't!!!
Kelsey - just seemed to look like a kelsey
Hogan - because when we saw him he was a hulk of a boy
Buzz - daughters fault !! but for agility it does get him excited and a quick response.
Am getting another munster [bitch] pup in a few months time and can't come up with anything. I like names that aren't too long , easy to shout quickly and not common as I dont want to shout the name in the park and have 30 dogs answering - one would be an acheivement!!!!

Grange...noble sounding? The bitch that h*mps things???????????????? ;)
Christine I didnt know she was going to hump everything when I called her Grange!!!! Anyway she doesnt do it so much now being 13 and living with bigger dogs doesnt make it easy for her.

Koda - Alaskan for Friend
Kiska - Alaskan for Beautiful Goddess (and a part of Alaska)
Kayo - Alaskan for Snow
:)

Lydia - 11 yrs old. Named after the daughter of the person who we first imported our dogs from.
Carina - 4 yrs old. Means love and affection in English from the Spanish name.
Lana - 4 yrs. old. Means wool in English and as the breeds coat is wool thought that it wd. be a great name.
Anton - Short for his KC Briarlow's Antonio Garcia, named after the person who I first got the breed from :d
Lastar, haven't a clue, I presume it means The Star and he certainly is one. I'll have to look it up and see if that is what it means.

Rosie, after the breeders surname (Rose).........then her daughter Daisy, as Rosie's KC contains Daisy............hope that made sense!........lol.
Our boy is called Barney, just because I always loved it! The puppy we were waiting for before Barney, who died was going to be called Murphy, because I have Irish connections and he was black. My mums' bitch is called Jessie (after my great grandmother) and her new boy puppy is called Jed (my mums initials J. E. Dwyer).
Julia

Abby as its supposed to mean Aint no Angel how true that is.

I named a boy from my last litter Milor as when I was child my french grandmother had a big black dog called Milor who I just loved to death.
We live in the Fens so his KC name is Milor des Marais = lord of the Fens :D
Yvonne
We had Bonnie, not sure why she was called that my mum cant remember who named her! then we had my nanas dog when she died, he was called Toby because his KC name was Tobias of Tavis Glen. And now me and b/f have a sheltie called Leo, we chose that because of his thick mane like fur so he is Leo Lion (we called him that as a pup and now sometimes he wont come back in the park unless you call him LeoLion lol)
We've got Staffies-
Tara, coz she's posh like Tara Palmer Tompkinson
Chrissie, coz she's a Christmas baby
Todd, a film hero of my son's
and the latest addition Jasmine, coz I like the name :)

Well Tallulah got her name due to the first series of Big Brother!! It was sponsored by southern comfort and in the ads the gy say Tall-ulah in an odd voice..soon caught on as a catch phrase in our house and we said then that when we got a dog we would call her Tallulah - 4 years later we got her!!....It is a red indian name and means "leaping Water"! which is quite appropriate!!
Very interesting thread :)
Chloe - picked by my mam, she simply liked the name, then it became really popular and one time we were in the park with 2 other dogs called Chloe, that made for fun recalls!!
Kayla - sort of copied from a couple's child who came to view our old house when we were selling it, they were called Kayla and Taisha, both nice names and when it came to thinking of a name for our new pup we went through hundreds but came back to Kayla and it suits her down tot he ground, feminine but not too girly girly-that's my Kayla!!
Idõ - from his registered name Leiborschy Idõ, means wait/time in Hungarian, appropriateas we did wait for him. We did have anohter name planned for months but now no other name would suit him, as is true of all names I suppose!

My Lab is called Emmy. She was called this by the breeder. Her registered name is "Emily's Little Darling" as the breeder had a young daughter called Emily who took a shine to Emmy, but she couldn't pronounce the name properly so it got shortened to Emmy! we didn't have the heart to change her name when we got her. It suits her well though :-)

Keevy (Irish Setter) apparently means beautiful girl, I went to see her when she was 3 weeks old and fell madly in love on the spot and I knew I needed a special name for her.
Madelaine (Gordon Setter) We named her this as we knew what Gordies were like, she is usually called Maddie but gets Madelaine when she is being a pain.
Brianna (Irish Setter) Think it means firery red. I was reading a book and one of the characters was called this and I just loved the name so I decided that when Keevy had her puppies the bitch I was keeping was to be called this. Her name is usually shortened to Brie or Banana and suits her down to the ground, it has been mentioned by a few people that she has attitude :D
Alli

Fagan and Alfie are both Irish Setters. Fagan was NOT named after someone on Oliver twist, his name is Irish and means Firey little one, and he can be a real fiery one. Alfie was named after ALF (alien life form) from 80s tv because he was the same colour, now he has his adult coat through though so isnt even the same colour, but he certainly has Alfs zaney personality :D :D :D

Bronwyn, because I love the name and have no intentions of having children, so she got the name & Ellis stuck from the breaders, they named all the litter begining with E as it was the 5th litter of Lodon Cissy.
Now, the Harris on the other hand is called Dyna and I chose this after finding out it meant powerful one... I thought it was good anyway.
Ferrets ... Harry, Mel, Big Boy (because he is abnormally large for a ferret), Silver (because she is a silver), earless(cause she's got an ear missing) and mima(short for gemima as in Gemima Parry Jones the falconer).
Cats .. George, Megan & Chloe.
Thats the lot :D
We had a Sassie until october last year my son named her that after he watched the film Homeward bound
now we have a Benson named after im not sure lol
Daisie she was called daisie by her breeders but we liked so didnt feel the need to change it
and lastly Solo but there again not sure where we got that from lol
they are all boxers

Another dog called Solo!!! can't believe it, so cool, I take two lovely greyhounds out for walkies every day after last lecture, and one is called Solo!! the other is called Bilbo (from lord of the rings)!!
I love all your names! thank you all for posting them!
