I too have a question about phantom pregnancies.  I believe my dog may be experienceing a phantom pregnancy.  She went into heat around Nov 15th, 2004 and it is now Feb 10, 2004.  I have also made an appointment with my vet.  The reason I think she may be experiencing a phantom pregnancy is because I watched her like a hawk during her last heat, it has been too long since her last heat for her to be pregnant (see above), she hasn't gained any weight, and she is producing milk.  But, only her back four tits are enlarged, the front four are not (but milk does come out of them).  Anyway, my question is...I have never experienced this with any of my dogs.....is there anything I can do to help her through it?
Thanks!

Hi - phantom pregnancy is a perfectly normal reaction to being in season - almost every single bitch will experience a phantom to a certain degree after every season. With some the symptoms are barely noticeable; the bitch may seem a bit off-colour, while others go the whole hog, producing masses of milk, making nests, adopting toys as their imaginary babies and bcoming quite poorly. Most, like yours, are somewhere in the middle.

The best thing to do is cut the protein level of her food, give her more exercise and keep her busy - don't give her time to brood but take her out and about with you and be terribly hearty and 'jolly-hockey-sticks' with her. With luck that should prevent her going over the top with her symptoms. If she starts taking toys to bed, take them all away for a few weeks - it sounds harsh but it's the quickest way to getting her back to her old self, and she'll thank you for it in the end.

Ok, so I took my dog to the vet and he said he didn't think she was pregnant because he didn't feel anything.  He said you usually can feel the pups when the milk comes in.  And, her temperature was normal.  However, he was confused about her having a decreased appetite and being a little more lazy than usual.  He said this usually doesn't occur with false pregnancies.  Has anyone else experienced this with their pets being in false pregnancy?  Or should I be concerned about her not really wanting to eat and wanting to sleep al ot?  I don't like this vet (I just moved), so I don't know whether to trust his opinion or not.  I'm looking for a new vet, but don't want to wait until then for answers.  Thanks!
