Topic Dog Boards / Health / microchip removal?
- By ponk [gb] Date 24.01.05 07:05 UTC
I have a dog that is shown and I bought when he was 2yrs old.Took him to the vets for a health check and he was microchipped. My friend who shows him for me,said that it had moved and wanted my permission to have it removed! To be honest Im flabbergasted.....if it has moved surely it wont damage his health? He says it can be felt under the skin and the judge commented on it.......and he feels that it has moved and could cause health issues?Advice please as dogs health is my only issue. My dog is a long coated breed so there are no ulterior motives here only the health issue.

I doubt the judge would have marked him down for it I expect he was just drawing your friend's attention to it but I do think a roving foreign body could cause problems so I would be inclined to take him to the vet myself and ask advise.

thankyou for your reply. The dog did really well in his class so this isnt my concern.I know my friend is anti-microchipping so I wanted a broader view as I have never heard of them ever causing a problem.Youre right will take him to vets today and get his advice.

Unfortunately if not implanted correctly they can move, but often they move and mthen stay put in the new position causing no problem.  I would in you case keep an eye on where it is now and chaeck that it doesn't move at all every week for a few weeks and if not leave it alone.

A freind of mine has his Elkhounds chip move down her shoulder to near her neck, but it stayed pout after that.

I know a lady with a Champion buhund who was found to have a non functioning chip when checked when doing his Pets Paperwork.  He was X-rayed and chip found to be in place.  The chip company offered to pay for it to be removed and a new one implanted.  As it wasn't moving and was fixed she just opted for a new chip.

Another freind with a dobe had her chip break inside the dog.  Looks like it had moved down the shoulder blade, and in rough play when dogws will often shoulder slam each other the glass broke.  this caused a major reaction and a huge cyst which had to be drained then all the scar tissue cut out.  She was a CC winner and was never shown again.

All mine are Chipped and Tattoed, but all mine except youngest were chipped as adults.  Going to take little one for her booster so will be curious to see where her chip is now.

I have just had my dogs chip checked and it has moved from between his shoulders to just above his breast bone, the vet said it was unlikely anyone would think of scanning him there which is worrying us. Should we have it removed and a new one inserted.

i just accidently found my 6 month old's chip this morning. It was implanted between her shoulder blades, but it's now on her chest. Should it really have moved so far in 4 months? On the positive side, i was at the vets last week sorting out their pet passports and I scanned her for the microchip between her blades and it was picked up instantly. (she's a GSD x, so fairly large despite being just a pup :-) ) If your dog was picked up as a stray I imagine they would do a thorough check all over with the scanner anyway. Well, they do on tv anyway!!

Ive been to the vet with my boy and he says that there is nothing to be concerned about at the moment.Great advice from people though as I will have it scanned regularly now to have peace of mind. Thanks all.
