Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Fresh blood after whelping

Foggy, who whelped twelve super pups last Friday (about 4-5 days early) has definitely retained some placentae.   Of course, she's been into the vet for the usual antibiotic/oxytocin and x rays to check there are no more pups.   She's on 30 ml Collocal-D and 10ml 10% calcium borogluconate by injection once or twice a day, which keeps her blood calcium levels normal.    Also sugary/glucose drink for low blood sugar.

Pup are fine so far - fat and well fed.

She's still unsettled, and has the occasional fresh blood discharge (not the usual dark red/brownish).    She still straining and digging on and off.

Can anyone suggest what else I can do to stablilise her?

No fever or listlessness? Still interested in the pups?

Sounds to me Jo as if she still has a placenta attached to the wall of the uterus, maybe because she whelped early.  I would be keeping her on antibiotics to ensure that no infection starts.  I think I would be tempted to see if the vet recommended another oxytocin, to try and detach it.

It may well be that it will disintegrate naturally but whilst doing so she needs antibiotics.

So long as she is fine in herself and eating and drinking and looking after the pups then no cause for alarm, some of my bitch's continue to digg for quite some time after whelping, but don't like the sound of the straining.

She is, luckily, a very good Mum indeed, looking after them, but still restless.   Thank goodness she's doing all her digging in the garden (much to the detriment of the few plants there!)

She goes off her food intermittently, also her drink, but again, luckily that comes back in fits and starts, so her milk production isn't too affected.

The vet said that oxytocin doesn't have too much effect at this stage, when he gave her the last one a couple of days ago.   I presume that the suckling has much the same effect anyhow?     Anyone clued up on any homeopathy that might come in handy?   Have tried Caulophyllum already.

Wonder how long a placenta takes to disintegrate (awful thought) - if you can stop it turning into a pyometria just with good old Synulox?

did you  use the liver that we spoke about last year????
- By dogmad [gb] Date 19.01.05 21:47 UTC
Well..........we were all set to but the timimg and the fact the mating days were right over christmas day, boxing day, together with bad weather and he was also being used by someone else, felt that all was against us this time. What we decided in the end is that I will use him on Bonnie next year all being well, I am hoping she carries liver, also they share more ancestory whereas with Lucie it was a complete outcross. So for Lucie I went for Branchalwood lines we spoke about which will be a black litter, and if I keep one will give me a different line to go back to again. I am hopeful that both will work out well.
