I am located in the US and would like very much to purchase a female Gordon Setter pup when I am home in Scotland for a visit this May.  I presently have a Gordon Setter male who is the result of our female who was killed last year.  Unfortunately GS's are a very rare breed in this country and pups seem to have the same breeding background.  I am afraid that too much inbreeding may become a problem.  I would like very much to bring a pup home that I can be assured the ties between it and the dogs here are quite distant.
My husband is an avid bird hunter and loves his Gordon Setters for their wonderful hunting skills.  I love them for their beauty, brains and of course their temperament can't be matched.  If you or someone you know is planning a litter around the time we will be visiting I would be very obliged if you would let me know when and where the pups can be viewed and purchased. I plan to visit around 4-19 May and will be staying at my nephew's residence in Couper Angus.  I would appreciate any information you can supply me.

Thank you so very much.

Hi Bonnie,

This is not my breed but here's my gut instinct on your post - please understand, no offence intended I can assure you ;)

Responsible breeders in my own breed in the UK would not dream of allowing a puppy to be taken overseas by someone who they hadn't gotten to know over a lengthy period of time and about whom they'd been able to get references from other breeders in the same country - someone holidaying over here just at the time the litter was ready to leave would not be anything like enough time for the breeder and purchaser to develop a relationship with one another.

For what it's worth, try contacting the main breed clubs in the UK (details either from our KC website or do a search on Google).  The secretaries may be able to put you onto prospective breeders and in the short time between now and your planned visit you may be able to visit some and strike a rapport - always providing you like what you see when you get here ;)  If you like the stock in the UK and can form friendships with breeders here you stand a much better chance of being able to get a puppy - but even then, in all likeliehood it would be for you to import at a later date.

HTH, Good luck,
Teri :)
