Hello to anyone who can help!!

I've had my puppy for a couple of days now and everything has been great apart from at night.
She constantly all the way through the night, probably every 2hrs, for about half an hour, crys, barks, howls and any other noise she can make!
I've tried ignoring her, leaving a light on, giving her a teddy.
What else can i do to stop her from doing this? How long will this carry on for? Is this just a stage thy go through or will it turn into a bad habit?

Thanks.

A couple of days in nothing. Some poeple may recommend putting letting her sleep in your room however I do not like my dogs upstairs and have found that it is better to ignore the crying and it will stop.I would not leave a light on as the darkness will help her sleep but the teddy is a good idea.
It took 2 of mine about 3-5 days to settle the other one took 2 weeks!

Hi Guest,

I know it's a huge no-no with some but I don't leave pups to cry/howl - they've enough stress just leaving mum and siblings and coming into a strange environment.  Remember your puppy has probably never been totally alone for a nano-second until coming to you ;)

Mine always sleep in our room with us (not on bed as they could fall off - that comes later :D) and if you want when older gradually move them into another spot.

Regards, Teri :)

i agree with Archer, pups need to learn to be independent, one of mine who is a total softy took a week to stop, she still wakes me up occasionaly!   but do what ever you think is best, theres no wrong or right answer.     good luck

Ditto Teri. I move into the spare room with a new pup for a couple of weeks, even a home bred one once all the litter mates have gone. I set the alarm for 3.00am so it helps with house training and contrary to common wisdom I've never had the slghtest trouble moving the puppy to sleep in the kitchen later.

I definitely recommend a hot water bottle covered and well wrapped...when sleepy this mimics the body heat of a sibling and they happily doze off.  Both my pups settled in 2 days this way, in fact the first pup settled the second night- on his own...good luck

I beleive there is plenty of time for pups to learn to be independant, and that a box/crate close to you will have your puppy settled at night a lot sooner.

give a warm meal about 11pm,something like rice pudding, weetbix with welpi, like babys some thing warm and filling makes them sleep,i do this with my pup no problem sleep to 630 am,a dark room with a radio on and a warm heat pad in the bed all the nice comforts that we like plus a indoor crate,

For the first 5 nights our puppy howled, cried and yelped continuously.  On the 6th night I made a bed in the kitchen.  I slept down there he kept coming over to me through the night, but I didn't speak to him and made him very uncomfortable as he tried to lay on me, I tossed and turned and eventually he ended up on the cold tiled floor - so he went back into his own bed.  For 3 nights I did this and on the 4th night I made my bed up to sleep there and laid for a little while and he was very quiet, so I went upstairs and got into my own bed.  Since then he has slept downstairs on his own, he gave a few little whimpers but we just said "ssshh" from upstairs and he went back to sleep.

Every dog is different, but its worth a try!!  People said I was mad to sleep down with him, but I didn't want our dog upstairs in the bedrooms, I did that before with my other dog and didn't want it this time.  I am sure you will get some good ideas on "champdogs", this has helped me, our puppy is 10 months now.
