For the first 5 nights our puppy howled, cried and yelped continuously. On the 6th night I made a bed in the kitchen. I slept down there he kept coming over to me through the night, but I didn't speak to him and made him very uncomfortable as he tried to lay on me, I tossed and turned and eventually he ended up on the cold tiled floor - so he went back into his own bed. For 3 nights I did this and on the 4th night I made my bed up to sleep there and laid for a little while and he was very quiet, so I went upstairs and got into my own bed. Since then he has slept downstairs on his own, he gave a few little whimpers but we just said "ssshh" from upstairs and he went back to sleep.
Every dog is different, but its worth a try!! People said I was mad to sleep down with him, but I didn't want our dog upstairs in the bedrooms, I did that before with my other dog and didn't want it this time. I am sure you will get some good ideas on "champdogs", this has helped me, our puppy is 10 months now.
