Topic Dog Boards / Health / My Lab had convulsions

My 13 yr. old Lab had a horrible convulsion on Thursday night, then another a couple nights later. I took her to the vet and he ran all kinds of tests. Her liver is failing. He gave her antibiotics just in case she has a bacterial infection. That may or may not be the cause of her demise. He gave her some stuff to help break down digestive bi-products to make it easier on her liver and he prescribed a diet of mostly carbohydrates....very low protein.

She is old. She has had a good, happy life with lots of fun times. So, why then do I feel so rotten? Why does it not ever get easier when you've gone through this sort of thing many times before? She's been in my life for quite a long time and is associated with so many good times with my kids, riding with my horse and me on trails. She's been such a good companion, so sweet and loveable. It's like she's taking those times away with her. But of course, that's nonsense. Those things are memories.

I don't know how much longer I'll have her in my life, not long I expect. I'm so sad.

Why do we keep getting dogs and going through this? I guess because they are so much more than death and losing them is.

Thank you for such nice replies. You really helped me in my time of saddness at the prospect of losing my long time friend. I hope you all receive the same kindness when your time comes.
