Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / pulling to say hello!

My 2 labs - 2yrs & 1yrs - are both doing well generally with their walking on a loose lead, although we still walk them individually and have to do a fair amount of walking backwards, in circles, etc, especially with the younger one. However they both adore other dogs and when one appears, pull like steam trains in order to greet them. (Of course I always ask the owner if its OK for them to do so.) OH is finding this difficult. I presume since they're not supposed to get rewarded for pulling, the way to handle it is to walk away from the other dog - but surely that way they're never going to "meet and greet" other dogs except at their training classes, and obviously we don't want to discourage them from being friendly -

if you have the other owners permission is this a problem?why?

Because they're pulling to reach the other dog, which we want to stop!

Any meeting and greeting, taking place ANYWHERE should be under the owners control - and if the dogs view meeting another dog as rewarding, then it should be used as an opportunity to teach basic pet dog manners, and only allowed IF your dog has made controlled progress towards the other dog (or sit and wait until the other dog comes to you - although it's harder to control the other dog and stop them if your dog gets up). Labs don't tend to give up too easily, so long as there is no pain/discomfort in walking in the other direction, there shouldn't be a problem.  Look on meeting and greeting as being the ultimate reward that your dog should earn, it is not an automatic right!

I can sympathise with you Carene as my dog does this, its a nightmare getting through the door at training class! I have tried turning round and going back but she only gets more excited, if thats possible, and I just have to be dragged in. Once in the class and training starts she is great and usually takes no notice of the other dogs until its time to 'weave' or 'greet' then I find a firm 'NO' or 'LEAVE' does the trick. BUT it never works, as I said, going through the door at 'school'. I have tendonitis in my wrist as well so she can be a real pain. I now walk her with a halti and I find this has reduced her pulling power, making her sit before she can greet works also
