'BONKERS' CONKERS BAN

Children have been banned from playing conkers by council chiefs - unless they wear goggles.

They say the youngsters could be injured by shrapnel from conker battles and recommended schools axe the years-old playground favourite

But headteacher Shaun Halfpenny found a way around the ban.

He bought his children goggles that are usually used in science lessons.

Now children are queuing up to face-off.

Mr Halfpenny, head of Cummersdale Primary School, in Cumbria, said: "The children asked to play conkers in school and I thought it would be really mean to say 'no'.

"This is a rural custom that should not die. You can't wrap children up in cotton wool all the time, you have to let kids be kids."

Cumbria County Council and the Department of Education say individual schools should decide if they believe it is safe for kids to play the game.

ban conkers

Me and my OH spent about an hour collecting conkers the other evening, poor Fagan sat and watched us totally bemused as we raced around fighting eachother for the biggest conkers :D :D, by the end we had a poo bag full each - we have yet to have a contest - ive got to soak mine in vinegar first ;)

This seems really bad reporting, the council have not banned conkers at all, the head teacher was on the radio this morning and said that as he was expecting an inspection by the Health and Safely people he had issued the goggles to ensure there was no question of the the kids not being able to continue with the tradition, the kids by the way love wearing the goggles :)

Me and my OH were wondering whether kids these days still play conkers ?  all you hear on the media is kids playing computer games etc, just wondering if many kids do play these days or if it isnt trendy any more ?

I heard this on the news this morning and was totally disgusted. WHEN are people going to realise that children actually LEARN from this sort of activity? They NEED to learn from playing around that there are consequences to your actions..if you are not careful when playing conkers it can HURT!

ARGHHH

I SO need a bang head against the wall smiley :(

It's depressing, isn't it :( The things that we did as children - they would all be banned now :(

I'm surprised that there are many parents left who let their children do this sort of thing - most of them are cloned into being young adults, skipping childhood and don't know how to 'invent' games or want to play with anything that isn't expensive :( (Oh dear, I'm turning into my mother - old and cynical :D )

But they are still at liberty to hurt themselves rapping their little knuckles to their hearts content, Melodysk, he just thought it sensible to protect their eyes and I think I agree with him we are all a lot more sensible doing DIY, strimming in the garden etc, aren't we?

PCism gone mad in my humble opinion :)

We will have to disagree on the subject I guess  ;) I am trying to remember the last time I saw a report of a child being seriously hurt by a conker ....

At our childrens sports day back in the summer, this year there wasn't any parents race, toddlers race.................and end of term no football match between teachers and parents..........all for health and safety reasons, schools insurance doesn't cover parent's for accident..........it's getting really stupid now!!  :-(
